Abuse of property tax exemptions widespread in Illinois survey funds

A statewide Associated Press survey finds extensive abuse of tax exemptions in Illinois, with over a million acres untaxed and records in 102 counties in disarray. Government and charitable land, private clubs, banks, and churches use exemptions, driving up taxes for compliant homeowners and leaving vast property unlisted on rolls. Despite state law, many exemptions go unreviewed or stay on the rolls when ownership changes, and local officials lack staff to fix the mess.
