Thompson signs change to school aid formula

Gov. James R. Thompson signed a bill changing the state aid formula for public schools to divert funds from Chicago to downstate districts. The measure, approved 144-0 in the House and 49-3 in the Senate, preserves overall Chicago funding but cuts its elementary and high school amounts. Selected Southern Illinois districts receive specified funding for fiscal year 1982, as state spending on K-12 rises to 1.51 billion, with total available money up 6.8 percent.
