The program aims to detect diabetes mellitus, a disease causing sugar in urine and blood, which can lead to blindness and death if untreated. The U.S. Public Health Service estimates 1,250,000 undetected cases nationwide.

Plane loving couple fly by landmarks and time rules

Dr. John Tidwell and his wife Mrs Tidwell, owners of a single engine plane, travel for convenience and enjoyment. They use visual flight rules and a system of omni navigation stations to stay on course, sometimes landing after three hours of flight time or in valleys when radio signals fail. Bi County Plan Diabetes Screen Aims at 700 in Two Counties

The Bi-County Health Dept launches a four phase program to identify about 700 people in Franklin and Williamson counties with diabetes who are unaware of their condition. Physicians are asked for patient names, then for immediate relatives to invite for finger-prick blood sugar tests with no charge. Positive screens lead to physician diagnosis but do not confirm diabetes. Testing will focus on high-yield family groups, with 10-20 tests weekly, and broad public testing after relatives are screened. The first team starts soon, funded by a one year state grant of 4309 dollars.
