Video and model aid probe into Minnesota I 35W bridge collapse

A security video and a computer model of the Interstate 35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis and St Paul emerged, with officials saying the tools will speed the failure analysis. The eight lane span fell into the Mississippi River in four seconds, killing four and leaving up to 30 missing. Divers resumed searches as investigators consider corrosion, repairs, and prior safety notes while a FHWA analyst builds an edge by edge failure map to identify root causes.

Bridge collapse should have little impact on shipping

Minneapolis bridge collapse on Interstate 35W over the Mississippi is not expected to disrupt barge traffic significantly. Experts say most commercial navigation operates below the site, with downstream loads, and the small upstream lock handles about a million tons yearly. Some short term logistics challenges remain for local metal recyclers shipping upriver cargo by truck to nearby terminals.
