Bridge collapses on I 35W in Minnesota during rush hour
The interstate bridge over the Mississippi in Minneapolis collapsed during rush hour, sending cars into the river and along the banks. Mayor R T Rybak confirmed six deaths while Gov. Tim Pawlenty called it a catastrophe of historic proportions. Rescue crews searched the wreckage as motorists watched, and authorities said most construction workers on site were accounted for. The 40 year old bridge’s collapse left about 50 vehicles affected, with fires and people seen in the water and on the riverbank.
