Thousands march on Washington rail protest disrupts trains
Thousands of rail workers gathered in Washington while Conrail and Amtrak cutbacks sparked widespread disruption from New York to Philadelphia. A Conrail sick-out cancelled 15 of 74 morning rush trains and halted all Bronx service. Philadelphia saw delays, with normal service restored by 7 p.m. AFL CIO President Lane Kirkland urged government support, warning Amtrak and Conrail would be decimated if Reagan proposals pass. The rally drew participants from 16 states and beyond.
