Senate committee OKs hiking license plate fees
Illinois to raise annual license plate fees and expand transit taxes under a Democratic rescue plan. The Transportation Committee approved increasing small car fees to 30 and large vehicle fees to 45, with a plan linking a 0.25 percent regional sales tax to finance Chicagoland mass transit. The committee also backed scrapping the Regional Transportation Authority and forming a new transit finance board, allowing some suburban counties to disconnect while maintaining broader tax support. Governor Thompson faced criticism from Republican senators over party coordination and funding strategy.
