Jason Dias Machado, noted business man in Coquille and Myrtle Point, Oregon, died December 7. Born January 29, 1846 in St Michaels Portugal he built a varied career from seafaring to groceries and hotels. He married Bessie Deary and left a legacy of active enterprise in Southwestern Oregon.

She urged registration of women and noted Oregon's high Red Cross and Liberty Bond efforts and Hoover Food Pledge cards. Death of New Orleans native leaves family and friends
In 1877 the New Orleans born individual and union produced four children: Glenn Machado Kearney of San Francisco California, Bessie Machado Broullette of Myrtle Point Oregon, Jason W Machado of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, and Lawrence D Machado of Myrtle Point Oregon. The wife and mother died May 12 1906 and rests in Myrtle Point Cemetery. Besides the family a large circle of friends mourn the loss.

Enlistment Chance Open for Draft-Age Men in Oregon
Portland reports a special ruling by the Provost Marshal General allowing draft-age men not yet in service to enlist as volunteers in the Army Navy or Marine Corps up to December 15. After that date only volunteers with certificates of non-need from local boards may join. The Oregon Coast Artillery seeks 180 volunteers before December 15.
