Dr E Spires, formerly of Myrtle Point, has returned to the town and assumed the dental practice of Dr D W Gules. A recent UC Berkeley graduate in dentistry, Spires will operate in the office previously held by Dr Gules under the supervision of Dr G C Phelen, who has long been at Ashland.
Nelson R. Smith of Myrtle Point and Coquille died Friday at the family home in Coquille at age 81. A Civil War veteran, he served three years with the 122nd Illinois Infantry and was born in Illinois. Survived by his widow Winnie Wilkins and one son Leon of Bandon, two sisters Mrs. Mabel Flanders of Bandon and Mrs. Belle Drane of Coquille, and two brothers Clarence Smith of Bandon and Fred Smith of Bend. Burial was Sunday in the A. R. cemetery.
About 60 Strong family members gathered at Warner's Grove near Myrtle Point Oregon for a picnic after generations shared stories of early days. Grandpa Strong, a local hardware merchant, and wife were central, with Frank Strong of Santa Cruz and L. M. Strong of Bandon among attendees. The couple married in Keokuk County Iowa in 1863 and migrated via the plains, settling near Myrtle Point in 1888. Even past eighty, Mr Strong recalled years of hard work as the family enjoyed a full day of reminiscences and Oregon hospitality.
City hall meeting set three daily chariot races with purses totaling 100 dollars per day 50 80 and 20 plus daily relay races with purses 40 25 and 15. Myrtle Palm band 390 pieces strong was engaged for the season.
The Myrtle Point community announces a supervised playground for local children. The opening is set for Monday afternoon, August 10, at Hermann’s Myrtle Grove on Railroad Ave. Thanks are due to Mr. T. M. Hermann and Mr. Roupp for securing the grove and enabling the project. The American announces ownership change with J. M. Bledsoe selling the plant to Geo. E. Hamilton from Escondido California. The transfer took effect at the start of the month. Harold Bargelt and Mise Dorothy Miller remain with the paper. Hamilton, his wife and two daughters, arrived in Myrtle Point from California two weeks ago and reside at Lee Bay apartments. Hamilton is an experienced publisher from Iowa, Washington State, and Idaho papers.
The Myrtle Point Chronicle reports a staff shift with C F Me and new owners taking over the paper under Harold Bargelt guidance. It notes passenger boat services between San Francisco and Portland and mentions local business changes including Griffith Co. purchasing a vessel and Griffda remaining in operation. The publisher asks readers to contribute news by mail, telephone, or in person.
Myrtle Point's new union high school on South Fourth street progresses well and is set to open September 6. The district's irregular boundaries cover multiple grade districts and a large area. the building includes a gym, assembly room, domestic science, and vocational spaces. About 40,000 to 48,000 dollars will be spent with local contractors and many workers from the area.
Citizens under district No. 70 question whether they remain under Poiriera or transfer to No. 41 Myrt le Point Union High School district. The late county superintendent of schools was killed. notices and district status debated before Judge Mast at Coquille. The judge adjourned until the 30th to determine if proper notice was published.
Petition to appoint Wallace B Dement administrator for the estate of the late John Samuel McKinnon was filed in Coquille county clerk's office. The estate is valued at five thousand dollars and carries a claim for medical aid and burial. Seven heirs or claims are noted.
The Myrtle Point real estate agent notes a looming demand for about 25 houses as school opens and families crowd in from the berry season boom and Coos County attention. Cramped living and squatting persist while new arrivals surge.
The American office reports a nurse found on the street has a purse belonging to a little girl. The owner should call at the office to establish claim and recover it at no cost.
An elderly Gold Hill man driving a Ford runabout ran off the north approach to the bridge west of town near noon Wednesday. The car is at Pearce garage for repair estimated at about two hundred dollars. The owner claims a California licensed car crowded him from the approach. The Coquille County Court has been called into the case with a Myrtle Point representative to gather details.
