Beaches Open Friday Amid Park District Summer Plan

Thousands of Southeast Side residents will flood lake fronts as bathing season starts Friday with lifeguards on duty at three Jackson Park beaches and at Calumet Park from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Over 300 lifeguards trained for the 13 Park District beaches as Rainbow Beach also opens. Summer camps begin July 5 for ages seven to 14 with activities including swimming, fishing, sports, hiking, and treasure hunts at Tuley, Jackson, and Calumet parks and other local sites. Swimming will be limited to designated areas with gear restrictions in place at pools and beaches.

Rare Chaucer editions on display at University of Chicago Library

The University of Chicago Library showcases 12 major Canterbury Tales editions including Caxton 1478 and 1484 first two printings, and a pre 1500 Poynson edition. The display runs daily in Harper Memorial Library from 9 to 1 this week and 9 to 5 starting June 27 through mid July, featuring two manuscripts and a facsimile Ellesmere copy.

City council, advised by the building and zoning committee, rezones five Southeast Side areas. Changes include shop to business district on blocks near E 87th and S Indiana, and several residential and volume district adjustments near E 83rd, S Merrill, BE 83rd, S Clyde, E 63rd, and Oglesby. Midsummer Festival at Augustana Home for the Aged

The Augustana Home for the Aged at 7542 5 Stony Island Ave hosts an outdoor Midsummer Festival on Sunday June 26 with open house worship at 11 am a 330 pm address by Dr Melvin Lundeen a Chicago Swedish Glee Club concert at 745 pm and an 8 pm vespers led by Rev Lloyd Burke. The Southtown Mandolin Orchestra performs before intermission and refreshments are served by the Home’s Women’s Auxiliary. Summer weekends July and August feature outdoor services at 745 pm on Sundays.
