A travel salesman narrates a classic confidence game used on farmers and townspeople. The con relies on a suave confederate posing as Mr Slick and a fake eye specialist Dr Debunk to seed a hotel town with forged telegrams and staged arrivals.
Preliminary plans outline a ward wide celebration tentatively named the Eighth Ward Week of Community Expression set for September 25 to October 1. Alderman Michael F. Mulcahy is named coordinating chairman with plans for each community to host activities and entertainments.
The Grand Cross-Chatham Chamber of Commerce will host its annual past presidents meeting at noon Monday in the Grove restaurant. Honorees include James Phillips William Horcher Carl Adams Edward L Rensnow Arvid E Peterson Eugene J Mooney Peter Bassett Milford Henkel Ambrose J Burke and Andrew C Metzger. Louis Hecker will preside with speaker Charles R R Simmons addressing Chicago local transportation problems.
Realistic toy cap pistols are illegal to sell or possess without a police permit in Chicago. Minors may not receive cap pistols with explosives from police. Violations carry a fine of 10 to 100 dollars. A Richman store case highlighted enforcement as juvenile crime linked to lifelike weapons.
Donald Treasuer 58 of 7245 Jeffery Ave was treated at Jackson Park hospital after a beating last Friday. He was later released and went home Tuesday unable to give a clear account of the assault to Officers Weeks Piper and detectives Walsh and Kelleher. He had been walking near 73rd Street and Jeffery Ave after dark when attacked.
Windsor Park Evangelical Lutheran church celebrates 25 years with back to back services at 8 20 am and 10 45 am Sunday. The congregation will picnic at Douglas park Hammond after the service with Rev Arthur H Kaub delivering a sermon first preached here 25 years ago. Doreas club led by Mrs B L Jacobsen plans softball and contests with refreshments after arrival. Those needing transport may ride the Hammond car from South Chicago to the Douglas park entrance.
Harris C. Trow, 61, an engraver from 6950 Jeffery Ave, died of a heart attack near the northwest corner of Tist Street and Jeffery Ave while on his way to work. He was buried in Kingston, Mass, after service with Bryn Mawr Community Church where he sang in the choir for 15 years. survived only by his widow.
Jackson park will close registrations for a free eight to ten week Summer day camp for ages 10 to 15. Camp features tents open air lunches and outdoor crafts in a city park with no fee. Registration may be made at the golf shelter east of 63rd street and Stony Island, or by mail notification sent after registration ends.
Southeast Economist promotes Southtown Beach as a new Summer colony near Fish Lake Indiana. Subscribers can buy lake lots for 78 dollars with 1.5 dollar yearly subscription and 10 dollar down, two year balance, plus access to beach clubhouse and hunting rights. Building restrictions aim to keep the area attractive. A road map to Fish Lake appears on page 7.
The Woodlawn Business Men's Association collected donations at a Tuesday noon meeting to pay for Susanne Erle's funeral. The 75 year old former hotel housekeeper died in poverty last week. Burial occurred Tuesday afternoon at Beverly Cemetery. Joan Hayes presided as the group adopted a unanimous resolution supporting the burial.
Anita Gaffney 12 daughter of Mr and Mrs William Gaffney of 6826 Ridgeland Ave was killed Monday afternoon when a New York Central train struck the automobile carrying her and her mother on US Highway 66 three miles south of Staunton. Mrs Gaffney was treated for shock and minor injuries. Two young boys aged six and ten escaped serious injury. The family was en route to visit another daughter in Averland Mo. Funeral services for Anita were held at Immaculate Conception church.
