Port To Bring Billion Dollar Boom To Area
Calumet port commerce could exceed 1 billion dollars in Southeast Chicago. Port director John J. Manley told the South Chicago Chamber of Commerce that New York estimates show service businesses around the port may gain 15 dollars in activity per port dollar. He projected the Chicago Calumet port handling 70 to 80 billion tons annually as the St Lawrence Seaway improves. Manley said shipping would create exporters and importers, finance and insurance firms, ship chandlers, repairs, and marine contractors, with new employment and construction across the region. The Great Lakes are to become the high seas. He noted global interest in the project. Manley was introduced at a South Chicago YMCA meeting by the chamber’s professional division, led by George A. Rooney.
