More than 1 million dollars will fund installation of Mercury vapor street lights on the Southeast Side over two years. About 16 miles of streets will be illuminated as 10 projects are planned with eight awaiting appraisal. Funding comes from Motor Field tax funds.

The University of Chicago announces a three year drive for 32.7 million to strengthen teaching and research fund neighborhood improvement and student housing and expand financial aid. Trustees have pledged over 4 million to date with 19.979 million earmarked for teaching and research.
The First Universalist Church of Chicago will hold its first service in the new building at E 83rd and S Ingleside at 11 am Sunday. Rev David H. Cole will preside and speak on The Meaning of This Building. The modern two-building complex features an open court and glass vesals with plans for an outdoor mural. Dedication is slated for October after furnishings are installed. The church seats 200 and school room seats 123. total cost is 160000 dollars. This is the seventh building in the congregation's 119-year history, previously located at 66th and S Blackstone, with services at the Chatham YMCA.
Mayor Daley expressed displeasure with the proposed 60 foot elevated ramp off the Calumet Skyway at E 77th and Stony Island. He asked Public Works Commissioner DeMent to study alternatives and tied the issue to neighborhood conservation and broader traffic issues at the 79th Stony Island South Chicago intersection. The city’s business groups urged options including CTA bus access and ramp relocation west of Stony Island.
Einar Johnson announces an intensive cleanup campaign in the Eighth ward to begin today. Three residential streets S Mainland S Drexel and S Ingiesidenves between E 79th and E 87th streets will be mechanically swept in the next days using a shared sweeper from Seventh and Eighth wards. Parking signs are posted to aid the operation. Johnson also secured a sweeper for Cottage Grove avenue between E 71st and E 75th streets on Tuesday June 21.
