Steve Roseworn, 27, of 7830 Kingston Ave, will face manslaughter charges in Felony court on June 16 following a collision that killed Edward Thomson, 41, of 8035 Woodlawn Ave. and injured two others. Thomson, a Windsor Park Coal employee, died when his coal truck collided with Roseworn’s car on South Shore Drive. An inquest was continued and Roseworn testified. he was released on bond. Thomson’s widow Mildred and four year old son Donald survive.
Thousands visited Southtown Beach at Fish Lake Indiana for Memorial Day weekend. The new Summer colony, opened three weeks ago by the Southeast Economist, saw 2100 motor parties on Sunday and Monday, with all sleeping cottages booked and the dining room sold out. Visitors enjoyed picnics, boating, swimming, and outdoor tables, while residents Ralph F. Krueger Sr and his wife praised the Economist staff for hospitality. Many visiting families bought Summer homesites, and plans for cottage construction were already under way.
Four Southeast residents serve on a civic committee planning a series of education events on the Chicago lake front for Navigation Day. Judge John P. Mc Goorty announced the July 3 event and highlighted the Lake Michigan waterways and agency efforts maintaining 28 miles of breakwaters pumping stations lighthouses and yacht harbors as key parts of the world’s greatest inland port.
Alma W McMahill, 6255 Kimbark Ave, a candidate for First Lady of Woodlawn in the Woodlawn Business Men's Association campaign, outlined a $1 million Woodlawn Civic Center proposal to centralized activities with an auditorium theater clubrooms recreation rooms and banquet hall. The center would host lectures recitals debates and public forums and foster a Little Theater movement to develop local talent.
Alger Reed, 10, living at 8123 Langley Ave, fractured his left arm when he fell from the back porch Monday afternoon. The injuries included a below elbow fracture and a wrist fracture. He was treated at Illinois Central hospital and remained overnight before being taken home Tuesday morning.
Mrs R A Weeks 38 visiting from 3756 N Central Park Ave drowned at 75th Street on Lake Michigan while swimming after lunch with Mrs Thure Nordlander. Funeral held at Barron chapel, burial at Waldheim cemetery. Coroner's inquest heard Weeks planned to swim before dinner despite cold water.
