Fillmore police sought a three man gang after Lionel Ives, owner of a chain of filling stations at 7749 Yates avenue, was robbed of 2500 dollars in a noon Sunday heist on Douglas Boulevard. Ives described two assailants as about 23, stocky and short, with the driver around 30 and partly bald. The trio blocked his car, forced him to move, and fled in a late model auto after taking the cash from the glove compartment. The crime appeared premeditated as Ives uses the same route often.
Carl Falcone, 34, charged with the murder of Robert Hall, 44, after a March 17 slaying in Hall’s home. The trial was postponed at the request of Assistant State’s Attorney Richard Devine and is now set for next Wednesday before Judge John Sbarbaro.
Hundreds of Southeast siders thronged Southtown Beach at Fish Lake Indiana for the opening of the final new section of homesites. Lots sell at 78 dollars each with 10 dollars down and 3 dollars a month. Purchasers gain lake access, private beaches, parks, colony clubhouse rights, and improvements. The three way intersection at 79th Street Stony Island Avenue and South Chicago Avenue sees over 38 thousand motor vehicles daily in a typical business day, making it Chicago’s second busiest intersection for traffic. The test, conducted by WPA under city departments, also recorded 12 thousand pedestrians crossing 79th and its avenues during the same period, with State and Madison streets carrying about 29 thousand vehicles in twelve hours and Ashland Avenue and Irving Park Boulevard topping the list at 52,572.
A man entered the Tudor Manor Apartment hotel lobby on Phillips Avenue before midnight Sunday, surveyed the area, then pointed a revolver at night clerk Edward Whinnery and demanded the cash drawer contents. He escaped with 1935 dollars and five letter mail addressed to residents. Whinnery described the robber as about 25, medium height and stocky.
Charles Weisman, 34, of 7234 University Ave, died from a skull fracture after an Illinois Central train struck him on elevated track between 70th St and Kimbark Kenwood. Engineer L McDonald testified he did not see him. inquest failed to reveal why he was on the elevated grade. transit access to the platform was noted as easy at night. Passengers aided the scene. Weisman died two hours after hospitalization.
