Many Matters Before the Council
The South Haven council crowded the chamber with a busy session. A five year ground lease on West Phoenix Street for $1 a year, with maintenance conditions, was referred to the judiciary committee. Council approved salary figures for a bridge tender and street commissioner, rescinded a printing contract in favor of the Evening Post, and amended a bicycle on sidewalks ordinance to allow restricted access for workers. The riverfront harbor matter was set for morning consideration with D H Patterson and attorney S H Kelley. A sidewalk grant to Mr Nelson and crosswalk repairs were authorized, and G G Spicer was unanimously nominated street commissioner.

In Memoriam Jane Norrish, Devoted matron and mother
Jane Norrish born June 9 1823 in Locksbier parish Devonshire England moved to Churchill Farm later married John Cording in March 1849. They emigrated to the United States in 1867 or 68 settling near Forest Illinois then moved to South Haven on Kalamazoo Street. Nine children were born to the Cordings four survive Edward John Mrs John Merson and Mrs Laura E Herron. She died last Friday after a year of invalidism. A loyal Methodist for 35 years she lived a life of faith and devotion whose memory endures in her family and friends.

Sorting could not be done locally, so cars were directed to Jackson for sorting. Wright advised building a freight house here, possibly converting the present station and constructing a new one.

Wreck of the Twentieth Century Flyer Near Mentor
The eastbound Twentieth Century flyer on the Lake Shore wrecked near Mentor Ohio twenty miles east of Cleveland at 9 35 p m. An open switch left by a freight crew caused the fatal derailment sending passengers from berths to aisles as the engine plowed the ties. Six killed, sixteen seriously injured. attorney Bennett of New York identified among the dead. Blame placed on the freight crew and railroad officials.

The Iroquois, after unloading cargo, was dropped down the river opposite Center Street for repainting with the same colors as before. Traction Company to begin laying track in a week
The South Haven Traction Co has received four carloads of rails and awaits ties before starting track laying, likely within a week. Six or seven miles of grading are done, and with rails in hand the city line can be completed quickly. Mr Applegate expects the council to grant a franchise at the upcoming Friday meeting.
