Forest fires that had menaced the Alpena region for days were brought under control by heavy rains this morning. Officials report the downpour practically extinguished all fires, ending the immediate danger to the area.
Frank Henwood voices protest after a jury convicting him of first degree murder for killing George Copeland and sentencing him to death. Henwood’s lawyers plan to seek a new trial as authorities confirm the verdict and punishment.
Saginaw Michigan June 19 John T Winship who after July 1 will be state insurance commissioner today announced his appointments James Robinson of Charlotte head fire marshal succeeding Henry Wolf Tom C Shaeffer of Saginaw appointed chief insurance examiner Charles Williams of Sault Ste Marie and Chas Durand of Flint appointed examiners.
The marriage of Miss Ethel Vachon and John F. Carverry of Chicago occurred Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock at St Basil's Church with Fr. John A. Crowe directing. Attendants were Miss Cecelia Beland and John McNamara of Chicago.

Word was received of the death of John Mater at his Dowaginc home Tuesday evening. A prominent citizen and G A R veteran, he was father of Dr. E L Mater, a longtime South Haven physician, and Grace Mater, a former city schools teacher. He was also a cousin of C A Dickinson of this city.

Mr and Mrs G I Lull departed on the noon train to Toronto where they will spend weeks visiting her son E F Duncan and family. W W Sweet sustained a fractured right shoulder after a ladder slipped from its footing at his Superior Street home.
Kalamazoo June 19 Conductor Cook of Grand Rapids dies increasing the wreck toll from yesterday's Lake Shore passenger and gravel train crash. Of fifteen injured all recovered except gravel enginee r Charles Holenberg in very serious condition. Inquest expected to be postponed.
Funeral services for Mrs S L Hoag were held at 3 30 this afternoon conducted by Rev A F Nagler pastor of the First Methodist church to which she had presented her letter of membership from her Iowa church. The body will be taken on the boat to Chicago tonight with her two sons E L Hoag Cedar Rapids Iowa and H S Hoag of this city. Another son W E Hoag lives in Lincoln Nebraska. Burial will be beside her husband in DeWitt Iowa.
Miss Linn Warner daughter of Frank Warner wed August Teske at the German Lutheran Church of Peace with Rev. I Wegner officiating. They left by train at 4 45 PM for Kalamazoo to visit his sister Mrs Perley Deal and family and will travel to eastern points before returning to reside here.
Chief John C. Sweet and Deputies nabbed three men from the Michigan Central train in Kalamazoo on larceny charges. Steny Smytsk, Frank Topsk, and George Pluis, Polish laborers on A. M. Todd farms at Mentha, allegedly stole a pocket book with $1.50 and clothing from Saul Drozd. Topsk and Pluis profess innocence. Smytsk, 26, held for trial in Paw Paw after arraignment before Judge John M. Mott. Woodhams of A. M. Todd Co. and an interpreter presented evidence.
Ernest Ford of Plainwell is visiting his aunt Mrs. A. A. Lewis for a few days.
In St Petersburg on June 19 a fire set by villagers in the sugar beet district trapped eighty girls asleep in a dormitory. Doors were barricaded, leaving the women with no escape as the building burned. Dispatches from Kiev note cheap labor imports by sugar planters and suggest men started the blaze.
Washington June 19 The senate lobby investigation committee said any public figure named in discussions on sugar protectionism may be subpoenaed. Senator Reed and Senator Newlands testified and denied sugar magnates influenced views. Melville E Store of the Associated Press testified about publicity given by his news organizations to sugar men.
The Civic Improvement League gathered Wednesday at 7 30 PM with strong attendance. President L G Rhodes led the session as minutes from prior meetings were read and approved. A committee reported progress on urging the mayor to convene a special council meeting to choose an Oakland Park shelter site and John M Mott was thanked and appointed to discuss payment to Prof Tealdi.
A male suffragette sympathizer tried to imitate Emily Davison at Ascot by rushing the course with a revolver and flag during the Gold Cup entry. He was struck and trampled by horses and died. King George and Queen Mary witnessed the incident at the Ascot Royal meeting.

Mrs Chas Shiley who has been visiting since Sunday with her daughter Mrs H M Lockwood returned to her home in Kalamazoo this afternoon. The W C T U will meet with Mrs Hively at 330 Superior St at 2 30 o'clock p m Friday. A report of the recent state convention at Detroit will be given. Mr and Mrs L Copenhaver and two children and Don York of Plattsmouth Neb who have been visiting Mr and Mrs J L Stafford left this afternoon to return to their homes. Wm Wynn a brother of Mrs Stafford will remain for a longer visit.

Residents along Pearl Street reported a man in a straw hat and bathrobe asking for information. Police officer Archie Bell traced him to M. Mott of East Phoenix Street, an invalid seeking a relative's home. He sank under a parkway tree before being escorted home.
Seven people are killed and many injured when two electric cars collide at full speed on a sharp curve on the Napa Valley railway near Vallejo California. The wreck occurred today with dense injuries reported and emergency crews at the scene. Separately the household goods of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Baughman have arrived from Benton Harbor and are being moved into apartments above the Gas Company's office.
