An Arkansas man sought shelter in a hollow log during a thunder storm. The log swelled trapping his leg for hours as he reflected on years of unpaid county papers. He finally freed himself after realizing his unpaid status.
Mrs. Wm Spooner received a telegram announcing the death of her brother Martin J. Smith at his brother W. J. Smith's home in Casselton North Dakota Friday at 8 45 p m He was 46 and unmarried The cause is not given but presumed sudden He had lived with his brother Irving N in Everett Washington until spring then returned with Mrs Spooner from Washington Also surviving are his mother Mrs L W Loomis of Cuyahoga Falls Ohio and a sister.
In the case People versus Alonzo Clark before Justice Ketchum three witnesses were examined for the plaintiff, none for the defendant, and the case was adjourned to Tuesday June 21. In People versus John Rooney for giving liquor to Clyde Hall, a 14 year old, on May 29, after testimony and stenographic record, the case was adjourned to Tuesday June 21 for decision.
Prof. Chas. H. Little calliope and piano, and Master Car F. Jacobson violinist, both from Muscatine Iowa, engaged for the season on S. S. Hastland, arrived yesterday on the Soo City. They will present one musical entertainment on Sea City next Sunday at 3 o'clock.
Next Sunday June 16 the White Flyer City of South Haven makes its first Twin Cities excursion. It leaves South Haven at 9 30 a m and returns from St Joseph at 3 p m for a four hour ride to St Joseph and Benton Harbor. The vessel will be in special trim with music by the Military band of 20. President S J Dunkley and VP C W Williams entertain guests from Kalamazoo and other points.
Lewis Hoaz of Lacota arrives home from Chicago after a five week tour through Mississippi Tennessee Kentucky and Illinois buying fruit for Watzon Fruit Company of Chicago. He plans to head to Georgia to purchase peaches as a large crop will be ready for market soon. Good peaches are already coming from Alabama and Texas in car lots.
Mr and Mrs F C Knaak and Messrs Ottoman Haas and Edward Haas attended the Arbeiter society annual convention in Kalamazoo. The German aid group offers life insurance and sick benefit plans. Local branch has 51 members with about 10 000 statewide.
County Agent Plater of Paw Paw tracked down 14 year old Clyde Hall a truant and disobedient youth. He escorted the boy to Paw Paw and will transfer him to the State Industrial School for Boys at Lansing for reform and custody.
A line of cedar posts was looted yesterday by section foreman J McIntyre and his crew at the Michigan Central depot. The trunks, 30 feet high and spaced four feet apart, run parallel to the track for about 80 feet to create space for passengers and keep teams from getting too close to trains.

Special Telegram to The Tribune from New York details the Slocum Sunday school excursion from St Marks German Lutheran Church catching fire and burning to the water edge. Over 1000 aboard with at least 500 feared dead including the pastor Rev. Geo C Haas and his family. Capt Van Schaick in command was arrested as rescue tugs aided survivors and bodies were recovered.
The Michigan Christian Endeavor Convention will gather at Lake Orion from June 25 to July 1, one of the state’s largest gatherings. The biennial election on July 1 will include a secretary change after Miss Caroline Parsons of Kalamazoo declines another term after a dozen years guiding a 55,000 member, self-supporting union.
In Ryantsville Indiana on June 14 a street duel left three men dead. James Rout and Charles Rout were killed along with Milton Toro. James Rout and Frank Toro were also reported to have died in the incident.

Isaac Mc Kinzie recording secretary of Court Fruitland No 3075 I O F received a benefit check for Ada M Grussinger the life insurance on her deceased husband Charles William Geussinger. Deaths press were sent to the Headquarters of the Order of Foresters in Toronto Canada the returns received in ten days. This is the first loss for Court Fruitland in nine years.
A group of young people departed last evening on the Rere Marquette train bound for Covert to join others for a lakeside excursion about eight miles south. Misses Mayme Mead Margeret Andrews and Messrs Harry Howe and Chas Hill traveled, with Miss Helen Long and Geo. Kennedy of Covert to join later. Mrs H Kennedy and Mrs L K Long will chaperone. The party plans to use a summer cottage and a tent and will fish and enjoy various sports.
A Pere Marquette party led by General Superintendent AM. Smith Chief Engineer H. T. Alfred and others visited South Haven this forenoon to review railroad property with City Engineer Jones. They arrived by private car and departed later, signaling possible imminent improvements and renewed interest.

Loxico June 15 The harbor entrance at Port Arthur has been cleared of cenuna and opened for ship passage in and out. On Tuesday afternoon the Russian cruiser Novik went to sea and engaged Japanese torpedo boat destroyers. The destroyers fled toward safety but were pursued briefly by the Nyvik before escaping safely to Port Arthur.

Mr and Mrs E P Barnum, parents of Mrs H P Knudsen, reached Chicago from Portland Oregon Monday after traveling by train with their daughter Mrs W H Seig ner. They endured a snowstorm across the Cascades and harsh heat in Nebraska during the journey. They will visit the Knudsen family for a while before returning home.
