United Press reports a June 19 battle at Badeang between U S troops and Moro rebels under the Sultan of Jolo. Six Americans were killed and twelve wounded. losses among Moros not reported. The Moros fought with stubborn valor, and the Sultan refused U S authority.
A crowded Congregational church witnessed senior class day exercises with Hawley Otis presiding. The program featured an invocation by Rev. C. S. Lester, class history by Guy Sawyer, a recitation by Etna Nagler, and music by the high school chorus and violinist Ray H. Dillman. Highlights included the class will, a prophecy, and a presentation of a class mallet to juniors, followed by gifts to the faculty and a benediction by Rev. Lester.
Notice to owners and occupants of lands in South Haven Township Van Buren County Michigan. Weeds on lands and along highway rights of way must be cut and destroyed by July 1 1913 and again by September 1 1913. Noncompliance incurs costs plus a 10 percent levy. United Press report from Charleston June 12 says a Senate sub committee investigating West Virginia mining troubles left Charleston to view areas where operators and miners describe months of actual warfare. Only one key witness was examined before the tour began as Governor Glasscock missed his train and could not attend.
Supt Wilken warns growers to start spraying by next Monday at the latest for the first brood of codlin moths seen this morning at the experiment station. He notes the moth may be dangerous in ten days and urges immediate spraying to prevent scab, especially for orchards five or more miles back from the lake.
The high school alumni banquet will be held at the South Haven Club Rooms next Monday evening June 16 with serving at 630 pm. The invitation covers all former students whether graduates or not. Those not yet signified should notify Mrs E S Dyckman by Monday morning. Arthur H Ryall 98 will be toastmaster and a program of toasts and music is planned.
Plans for a second week in July tour along the West Michigan Pike to promote the project include public meetings in New Buffalo St. Joseph Ben ton Harbor Riverside Coloma Watervliet Covert South Haven Saugatuck and Holland. Dr. William DeKleine Grand Haven president and I W Allen St. Joseph officer coordinate with Governor Ferris and local committees for receptions and stops.
Miss Anna McCreary of the Johnston hotel dining room suffers a badly sprained ankle after a tumble down stairs last evening. Dr L G Rhodes attended and bandaged the injury. In Oakland Park the shelter house is under construction with footings set for piers and walls rising. Edward Ottoman reports progress on the ends near the lunch benches. J A Hagerman paid 8 45 fines after pleading guilty to assault and battery before Justice Mott, expressing remorse but claiming provocation. E C Webster received a sanitary ice cream freezer for his Williams Street plant and boasts the only can sterilizer in the city, making the cream germ proof.
Mr and Mrs M Weimer have returned from a visit with their son W F Weimer of Chicago. Daily boat service will begin next Monday June 16. The steamer Petoskey will depart South Haven daily except Saturday at 10 am and from Chicago daily except Sat and Sun at 9 am, with a 10:30 departure from Chicago on Saturdays. No boat will run from here until Sunday evening June 15 due to repairs after the Petoskey struck an object in Chicago harbor.
Springfield report notes the passage of a women suffrage bill hailed as epoch making by Mrs. Medill McCormack. The measure would allow women to vote for all offices and complete municipal ballots and presidential electors. Governor Dunne’s signature expected to enact full eligibility for women voters.
Tokio June 12 American yacht Columbia owned by J Harvey Laden of New York was seized today by Japanese authorities in Wakayama harbor a closed port due to nearby fortifications. Americans say the action is a mere formality with no international significance.
Secretary of State Bryan said the Japanese seizure of the ve yacht Columbia does not require diplomatic adjustment. He expects the American vessel to be released once administrative formalities are cleared, indicating a procedural issue rather than a political dispute.
Mt. Clemens Michigan June 12. County authorities say two men H R Stanley of Golden Colorado and J J Borgas of St Louis Missouri were arrested in an attempt to run a large pool room swindle. Officers found nearly one hundred thousand dollars in counterfeit money three thousand dollars in gold coin and many phony checks signed by prominent men. Two more men linked to the scheme were arrested at New Baltimore Michigan.
Petoskey Michigan reports a 24 hour struggle with surrounding forest fires endangers the village of Epsilon. Fire watchers expect another 24 hours of danger but believe containment is possible. All night the male population fought the blaze using back firing to divert the flames away from the village.
