Washington June 1 The French government agreed to use its good offices to secure the release of the kidnapped American Ion Perdicaris in Morocco. The British government is also pressing to help obtain Perdicaris’ stepson Varley’s release with energetic efforts.
From Wednesday's Daily reports A A Woodworth's souvenir stand on West Phoenix Street is nearly ready with shelves and blue backing to display shells. He crafts and handles all goods from sea coast to customer and aims to open by next Sunday, though readiness is not certain.
At last week's school board meeting several teaching appointments were announced. Miss Lottie Wilcox was hired for Paw Paw Street School to replace Mr. Nelson who moves to the North Oid School next year. Miss Ida Bixby will become assistant in the high school replacing Prof Brail, and Mrs. Nettie M Savage will teach first grade vice Miss Davies.
Fred Martin of Lacota is laid up for repairs after a Monday accident. He suffered a severe though not serious injury from a horse kick, with one leg bruised and one hand cut. He remains confined to home for recovery.
South Haven led with 10 firsts 7 seconds and 2 thirds totaling 73 points at the field day events. Winners included Lundy and Hemenway of South Haven in running events and Jillson Kennedy and Deal in pole vault.
Tuesday afternoon at the Scott Club drew over fifty ladies to hear papers on Shakespear's women. The program featured Juliet Portia Lady Macbeth and Catherine with readings by Mrs. Prentice Miss Grait and Mr. Carnes. Music by Mrs. Cook and piano duets by Miss Hartman and Miss Taylor delighted attendees. The club praised the event as the best program of the year and announced a June 14 entertainment finale with further notice.
A new candy factory begins operations at Myron Wakeman’s drug store in South Haven. Experienced confectioner Mr. Wm. VanLAP of Battle Creek joins to produce high grade candies including candy plums pineapple fritters and crystallized creams for sale locally. VanLAP is ready to open with a fresh line of goods.
The seventh grade at Central school held a Friday debate on whether coal is more important than iron. The discussion was vigorous with studied arguments and earnest debate. Judges Ora Cross Avon Edgerton and Fre Rowler ruled in favor of the negative.
Rev Dr W H Axtell of Chicago moves his household to a lake shore farm after the death of his wife. His son A C Axtell recently from Monterey Mexico will reside there this year as the doctor plans frequent summer visits.
Melrose Terrace, a Colonial style cottage on Lake Street just south of Avery Beach, opened yesterday in Monroe Park. Built by J C Worthington for Mr Rosenfedt and later sold, the nine room furnished resort will be run by Mr and Mrs C H Brown and aims to be first class in every respect.
Christian Church holds services next Sunday at French's Hall at 2 30 p m with sermon The Russo Japanese War and The Future of Russia a prophetic illustrated story. Quarterly Meeting of the Glen and West Casco M E witches at usual hours with Rev George L Mount preaching followed by sacramental service. Quarterly conference at Glenn on Saturday June 4 at 2 pm.
The Rebekah gathering Tuesday evening offered a diverse program with Lucy Mc Dowell and Myrtle Mapes performing an instrumental duet, Roy Cook delivering a recitation, Mavle and Mid- bur ger singing, Rosa Vitale and Bloomir Pennel giving recitations, and a quartet of Chas Erard Nellie Ams Earl Linderman with Come Where The Lilies Grow. Home Sweet Home on violin and guitar drew an encore with The Mocking Bird, followed by cakes and a social hop.
Dave Reid was kicked by a horse while passing behind it this morning. Both feet struck his right leg with blows to the shin and knee cap. The leg is badly bruised and likely to cause inconvenience. he limps with a cane. Old papers offered for sale at this office.
Charles William Grussinger’s funeral was held at 9 30 this morning at St Basil’s Catholic Church. Father Clarson of Paw Paw officiated with hymns by Mrs Hi H Letson Mrs C M Erard and Miss Louise Hilling. Relatives from Chicago attended including aunt Mrs Martin Smith cousin W Schoenherr and sister Mrs Lizzie Burdick. Numerous bouquets were given including a harp bearing Brother and a Maltese cross from the Foresters. Interment followed at Lake View Cemetery with Foresters pallbearers T McKimmie I McKinzie E I Hewson E W Edgerton F M Wheeler and J R Madill.
Readers urge action on the Pere Marquette depot described as disgraceful and harming the company’s image. Proposals include an immediate solution and a new depot at Center Street with a viaduct over the Michigan Central track, attributed to Mr. Williams.
Mrs Wm E Stewart reports the death of Mrs Wm L Patton in New York City May 25 at age 61. An early South Haven settler, she was born in Sincoe Canada and moved to South Haven in the 1860s, later relocating to New York about twelve years ago. Her husband built the residence now owned by A Stedman and died about 16 years ago. She leaves a daughter Mrs A Jillson of Chicago and two sons Will L and John Patton of New York.

A Tokyo telegram reports Gen. Kuroki’s forces routed Gen. Kuropatkin near Sumentse, with East Hai Cheng abandoned. Several guns captured and whole Cossack squadrons taken.
Capt Wilson of the John A Alber reports the government dock at Saugatuck is well under way with three pile drivers at work. Piles will reach 700 feet into the lake as the old channel is being dredged for the season's business.
Census takers S F Hill and A D Moore started the city census on June 1 under strict rules. The law imposes penalties for nonresponse. enumerators will finish before July 1 and will only ask necessary questions to gather names and demographics for a population estimate.
Special Telegram to The Tribune from Curcaco June 2 reports the Illinois Republican state convention in Springfield adopting the Stewart resolution and releasing delegates. Two ballots showed no material change with 46 votes on the last ballot shifting from Yates Lowden and Deneen to Sherman and others. A recess was taken to three this afternoon.
The S. S. Soo City of the Michigan Steamship Co. departs South Haven on Saturday at 4 30 p m and arrives in Chicago at 10 30 p m.
The Thirty Fourth Annual Meeting of the Pioneer Association of Van Buren County will be held in Hartford next Wednesday June 8. The forenoon will include reports and the election of officers a picnic dinner will be served in the afternoon there will be an address of welcome by the village president and a response by Rev L P Bates followed by a Keeler history recitations music reminiscences and more.
A competitive civil service examination for clerk and carrier will be held at the South Haven post office on Saturday June 11 under Civil Service Commission rules. Apply on the prescribed form at the post office or from Peter Newton secretary of the board of examiners in Chicago. The exam covers spelling arithmetic letter writing United States geography and reading addresses. Eligibility ages 18 to 45. Salary described as good with civil service rules enabling continued employment.
The Republican convention is set for June 7 to select a candidate for the state legislative race. Delegates from Judea City and nearby districts gather to discuss platform, nominate supporters, and set campaign priorities for the upcoming contest.
