The Idaho Experiment Station bulletin defines fire blight as a bacterial disease attacking apples and other trees. It spreads via bees, leaves no preventive except ring pruning and disposal, and favors well-drained, not overwatered soil. Next meeting topic is The Pomological Society and Its Influence led by E. Keasey.
Transfers show W R Evans to O W Lee for 3 500 dollars and other deeds in Haven and Covert including S F Hill to Mabel Burge and Lydia Thomas to Elizabeth Por fr and W F Thomas with values from 1 to 2 590 dollars. Notable names include Claray Haney J A Vorce Paviel Jillsen and S D Kenney with parcels in Geneva Covert and Haven.
A meeting of the British-American society is scheduled in the Town Hall on Saturday at 2 o'clock to plan the annual banquet to be held the week after next, ordered by the president.
Inmates of the Old People's Home enjoyed a Christmas afternoon program at 3 30 featuring prayers by Rev F M Taylor and Rev F G McHenry songs and solos by Gladys Taylor Eunice Foster Donna Hill and others and the Miss Browns class distributed oranges jelly and Christmas papers to all then visited the sick with greetings a day long to be remembered by all involved
A special council session considered an ordinance granting a franchise to G. E. Bardeen Co W Williams and S J Duckly. The measure was read, discussed by sections, and sent to the judiciary committee for report. Communications from Michigan Central and Cable Nelson on side tracks referred to Board of Trade. tax rebate claim referred to judiciary. Adjourned to next Saturday at 2 pm.

From Weenesday's Daily reports a blizzard across the country ranges from the Rockies to the Atlantic and Manitoba to the Gulf. Zero temperatures and heavy snowfall wreak havoc on railroads and communications in the Middle West. ships H W Williams and City of South Haven suffer damage and a spire is torn free. A crew labors to resecure the H W Williams and repair damage to docks and structures.
The Van Buren County Pomona Grange will meet with Paw Paw Grange on Thursday January 10 at 6:30 a.m. The program features a paper titled The Mistakes of the Farmer's Wife by Mrs J J Woodman and a discussion on cultivation versus fertilization in crop growth. After heavy rain and a 34 to 49 degree forenoon, the temperature fell rapidly from about two o'clock as a frigid Mississippi Valley wind increased to a gale by six. Snow accompanied the storm, but little accumulated. Morning thermometers ranged 10 to 14 degrees as the Weather Bureau warned of a further cold snap. Winds caused notable damage in South Haven's business district.
At about five o clock the Durkee and Gish delivery wagon driver left goods in a house on the north side. The horse bolted or was blown away by the wind. When found, the wagon top was badly damaged and the load broken or twisted off.
Severe weather strikes South Haven last evening shattering the plate glass of Remington & Company drug store and damaging the show window contents. Affected sites include McNeil & Smith barber shop awning, barber pole, L. L. Rogers electric sign, Haas building transom glass, and Tall’s iron watch sign. Damages run about twenty dollars plus glass replacement costs.
Union strength remains solid as 1905 opens with increased membership per capita tax and resilient organizations. Despite defeats on federal labor hour limits and injunctions, unions gain resolve, inspired by gains in Massachusetts and Colorado, and plan renewed campaigns to push favorable labor legislation nationwide. Samuel Gompers signals better organized, financed, and disciplined unions ready to broaden worker unity across major industries.
A corrugated iron awning at the rear of the Elkenburg building, home to Abell and Burge Bros, was blown off around 6 p.m. Pieces scattered while most were secured by Mr Elkenburg and Mr Abell. They worked atop the roof during the fierce gale to avert more damage.
The Prohibition Year Book asserts that brewers control most saloons nationwide with Detroit in Wayne County leading, citing deputy sheriff John Troy quoted by Truth as saying brewers monitor rivals and spread new saloon ventures to curb others.

An inspector recently investigated offenses locally, promising jail and a year in reform school for convicted offenders. The message warns residents that repeated crimes will trigger thorough state-wide action.

From Thursday's Daily Rev J D Carrothers gave a benefit recital at the Baptist church amid bad weather that kept attendance small. Attendees praised his reading of original writings including pieces from the Black Cac Club in the Uncle Remus style. Mrs Carruthers delighted the crowd with piano selections.
This evening at the First Baptist Church ordination services will be held for Mr. B. E Robison of South Haven, a current student at Chicago University. Rev. J. A. Pierce of Sterling Jr. will preach. Rev. Gaylord A. Slocum D D of Kalamazoo College will preside. Public invitation.
Waspais will conduct a third degree work at 7 30 p m Friday December 36. Supper will be served.
