Extensive preparations fill city churches for Christmas programs across denominations. Congregational, Baptist, Methodist, Free Methodist, and Epiphany churches host cantatas, decorated trees, and gifts. Notable features include a water into wine illusion by Rev Lyman and Dudley Buck’s Te Deum festival setting at 10:80.
Final papers for committing Mrs. Geo. H. Smith to the asylum were received this morning and the balance brought by Conductor Soule. Deputy Sheriff McGregor departed on the Michigan Central at 4 40 with the woman, whose distress stemmed from grief over her husband’s death two weeks ago. Though not violent, she was sent to the asylum as a precaution.
Asa Taber and Dwight Sayles of Berrien County were convicted in a federal court of swindling multiple people in western Michigan counties through fraudulent land deals. They were sent to the government prison at Heavenworth, Kansas, for one year, then will face Van Buren county authorities for further prosecution.
From Thursday's Daily Mil waukee reports the passenger steamer Argo has not been released. Pumps were removed and tugs have departed Milwaukee signaling an abandoned release effort.
The Te Tribune Messenger extends season greetings to its readers, wishing a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year with warm regards from the staff and publishers.
Elaborate preparations are being made at the Congregational church for the Sunday school Christmas exercises. A barrel of Spanish moss and some mistletoe from Winter Park Florida has been shipped for decorations and a Christmas cantata will be rendered by the children. The exercises will be held tomorrow Friday night to accommodate those who must work Saturday night.
A letter from O. Chapman dated December 9 reports settlement at St Andrew for Florida sojourn. He describes balmy pines oysters and a pleasant voyage meeting Drummond a real estate figure who cleared 394200 in a pine lands deal. Chapman says pine land values are rising and his family is well.
Troop A held drills last night as Henry McGuire was mustered in as a private giving the troop a full quota of three officers and fifty six men. The waiting list grows with about twenty applications on file. Personnel spent time stamping carbine manuals and equipment with troop letter regiment number and private number. Every detachable harness strap and piece of gear is stamped to prevent loss. The captain of Troop A is responsible for equipment valued at about six thousand dollars and Captain Lino emphasizes precautions against loss.
Michigan school children are urged to fund a memorial for John D Pierce known as Father Pierce, the first Superintendent of Public Instruction in Michigan. Pierce shaped the state system after studying Prussia, aimed to reach every child, and advocated a state institution for advanced pupils. He died in 1882 and is buried in Marshall.
Last night the South Haven Club held a well attended meeting with about 80 members present. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Wetz and Mrs. H. D. Hatch provided entertainment, though Mr. Hatch was in Chicago and unable to help. Pedro prize winners were A. J. Donovan and Mrs. Al Blood. Del ic ious refreshments followed, then dancing closed the evening's amusements.
Mrs. R. Kanhauser traveled to Kildare Oklahoma after the illness of her mother Mrs. A. G. Murray. She arrived seven hours after her mother had already died. Mr. Fankhauser fears further illness but has heard only a telegram announcing her arrival.
G W Merriman, a Jackson prison board member, misplaced a valuable finger ring during a prison visit. Guards conducted a wide search and Warden Vincent led the effort. The ring was found in the prison bathroom and returned to its owner.
Beginning January 1 1906 a new Michigan law requires birth certificates for all births. Blank forms record exact birth date including hour and January births will be mailed February 4 to the State Department in Lansing for inspection to find the first registered birth of the year. Announcement will appear in the January Michigan Monthly Bulletin of Vital Statistics. The law will raise accuracy and legal value of records.
Tuesday's Dairy notes a lengthy city council session with little business. Key items include testing Silas Billings gravel pit and spending 25 on gravel for Phoenix Street ravine, approving at cost indoor wiring for commercial customers, and a harbor line condemnation costs bill. Extensions on sewer assessments and a Main Street grade request are also recorded.
Supt. J. Edgar St. John of the State Industrial School for Boys died suddenly after a coughing spell, age 57. He led the school since 1911, known nationwide for reforming unruly boys and won wide respect in Lansing and beyond. His widow, who has run the school as matron, survives. Local friends express universal regret at the sudden death.
At the annual meeting of the Ladies Aid Society of the Congregational church officers were elected. President Mrs Henry Loomis First Vice President Mrs Viola Mc Gregor Second Vice President Mrs Byron Rockwell Secretary Mrs Gora Squier Treasurer Mrs E B Mapes.
At meetings today the New York Central Lake Shore & Michigan Central and the Cleveland Cincinnati Chicago & St Louis railroads agreed to create a pension bureau to aid faithful employees who have served many years and can no longer perform active duty. A committee will implement the plan.
Abell asks for township use of gravel from Silas Billings farm after state highway official Horatio Earle analyzes the sample. Earle says 57.1 percent retained on one eighth inch, 72 percent on sixteenth inch, 28 percent clay. suitable for sandy soils but not for clay. suggests township boards file applications for road miles and profile data. Also note a drive to fund a portrait of President Angell by John Sargeant for a campus building.
Grand Rapids report quotes Sen. J. Woodman of Paw Paw Van Buren County declaring the county free of reform and as a model of clean politics He recalls spending only 15 dollars for state senate election stationery and livery gear while noting opposition and his vote for the present primary election law under governor pressure.
E Williams of Kalamazoo exhibited two blueprints for 75 foot boats to operate between Allegan and Buchanan. Each boat will be 12 feet wide, draw 16 inches loaded, and reach 18 miles per hour. The venture will carry passengers and freight and connect with Chicago boats. A Kalamazoo stock company with $20,000 capitalization is formed to build and operate the line.
