A 90 year old widow Mrs Emma Buhl De Hart of Staten Island died after malnutrition and illness. A court ordered search uncovered about 274980 in cash hidden under her bed plus 205000 in banks and 740 shares of stock totaling nearly 500000. She left no will and relatives were stunned by the sum.
Secretary of the Treasury Humphrey told Congress a tax cut this year is absolutely out of the question and said it would be idle to forecast for 1958. He anticipated no tax reduction before 1959 unless a Treasury surplus is secured, while urging restraint on budget cuts and debt limits amid hopes for three balanced years of high prosperity.
Advocates for sharp cuts in the 3.64 billion foreign aid bill shift strategy as the Senate nears its first vote. Sen Long proposes a 90 million cut from an 800 million defense support authorization, aiming for momentum toward bigger reductions later. Lake J. B. Thomas is close to a historical high with an observed elevation of 2,255.55 feet by late morning, just 0.20 feet shy of the previous 2,255.75-foot record set in October 1955. Water release persists at a very slow rate, with about two and a half feet remaining to reach full capacity at the service spillway, and inflow from Tuesday night rains adding roughly 0.59 feet to the lake level.
In London eight people were killed when a double Decker bus jumped a curb and struck a crowd at a busy bus stop on Oxford Street. A Canadian woman, Mrs Nina Murray, died in hospital. The driver, aged 68, is suspected to have fainted at the wheel.
Yesterday a meeting at the Chamber of Commerce office laid plans for the Snyder cleanup campaign run by the health and sanitation committee. The event slated for June 24 to 29 will include weed mowing days, trash pickup, and a paint up fix up day with full plans to be finalized at the Jaycees meeting.

Gusty winds reduced visibility to about a mile in Amarillo, Childress, and Dalhart as a weak cool front moved eastward.

Dent’s absence stalls decisions on the Canyon Dam construction authority and the firing of chief legal counsel Joe Carter. Chairman Dixon and member Beckwith will keep closed conferences but wait for Dent’s return.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas reports district department store sales up 6 percent for the week ending June 8. Gains by city included Houston 18 percent, Fort Worth 8, El Paso 7, and San Antonio and Dallas 3.
Haiti's provisional president Daniel Fignole was ousted by a three man military junta led by Brig Gen Antonio Rebreau. The group declared a state of emergency and dispersed the cabinet as crowds gathered around key sites. Fignole and his cabinet were dismissed amid six months of political turmoil following clashes in May.
A raging blizzard trapped five men at the Pike's Peak Summit House in Colorado Springs as foot-deep snow closed the highway. Officials expected the road to be cleared today after repeated closures since its 1957 opening. Don Lawrie, the city street superintendent, called the spring snows the worst in his memory.
Mrs. Eugene S Williams of Sylvester remained in critical condition at Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a car struck a bridge abutment about three miles east of Snyder on U S Highway 180. The injury occurred yesterday morning.
An Emory University Hospital bulletin reports former Senator Walter F. George, 79, showing improvement from heart disease. The note says he has fewer chest pains and shortness of breath and may be responding to treatment for lung congestion.
President Eisenhower named Val Peterson as ambassador to Denmark and Leo A. Hoegh as Federal Civil Defense administrator. Peterson, ex Nebraska governor, has led the Civil Defense Administration since February 1953. Hoegh, 49, formerly Iowa governor, served 1954 to 1956 and lost his bid for reelection.
Two American Jesuit priests Father Charles J. McCarthy and Father John Alexander Houle were freed from Shanghai after four years of imprisonment and house arrest. They expect to leave for Hong Kong in about ten days and said they are in fair health. At release, a total of six Americans remained in custody in China, with high count reductions since 1951.
