Weather observer reports a seasonal warm spell with highs of 97 degrees on Sunday and 94 Saturday. Nighttime temperatures stayed comfortable with lows in the mid 60s, contrasting with the prior weekend’s cool, cloudy conditions.
The Associated Press reports new storms expected Monday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. across the eastern Texas Panhandle and western and northern Oklahoma. Glen Huffman Jr., 20, of Snyder, was said to be in satisfactory condition today after a Saturday plane crash near St. Clair Missouri. The crash occurred when the aircraft struck a high voltage line during landing. pilot Wesley Bates, 38, of Waynesville Missouri, was killed. Huffman suffered extensive third degree burns.
A Brooklyn housewife spotted a four foot lizard feeding on bread scraps for birds in the back yard. Her husband and his brother captured the reptile after a struggle and they turned it over to the Humane Society for owner claims.
Snyder Junior Chamber of Commerce said participants may stop shaving for the third annual beard growing circus as part of Western Week during the Scurry County Rodeo July 17 to 20. Finals and judging occur July 17 with prizes for longest, most artistic, and ugliest beards led by Jaycees president Charles Blakey.

Two men were injured in a one car crash about 10 miles north of Snyder early yesterday. Billy Pollard and Raymond Pollard, both of Dermott, were treated at Cogdell Memorial Hospital after their 1953 Mercury overturned on the Union Dermott farm road meeting U S Highway 84. Raymond, bruised, was released. Billy remained hospitalized with jaw cuts and other bruises. A second weekend crash near Snyder involving Clyde M Sturdivant and Ralph M Caster caused no injuries.
The U S Army reports Sgt. David G. Tijerina of Corpus Christi Texas drowned on June 3 while boating in the Regnitz River at Bamberg Germany.
Houston resident for 25 years and widow of former State Senator W. L. Hall 86 died yesterday. Funeral service planned for today in Wharton.
The Supreme Court, in a 5-3 decision led by Justice Harlan, orders a new hearing for Daryl Chessman the California sex offender known as the red light bandit. Justices Douglas Burton and Clark dissent and Chief Justice Warren disqualified himself. Chessman’s nine year fight to avoid the gas chamber at San Quentin centers on the accuracy of his 1948 trial transcript and the California Supreme Court’s affirmance of his conviction. The majority notes delays in criminal justice but says Chessman has not had his day in court on the contested issues of fact and law.
Work starts today on the new National Guard armory in Towle Memorial Park. Snyder builder Jay Tate says the $103000 project will take about 140 working days and cover over 14000 square feet. Site work includes hillside soil removal to ensure proper drainage. The court also votes $300 toward an all faith chapel at McKnight State Tuberculosis Hospital and seeks donations to reach the $75000 goal for completion.
Louis Girard and his wife Shirley arrived in Washington with a Ottawa Illinois delegation seeking an American court trial for Army specialist William S. Girard in the death of Naka Sakai. They presented signatures from about 6 800 mothers and planned a White House meeting with Edward A. McCabe.
Washington. Frank W. Chapman the 300 pound general treasurer of the Carpenters Union refused to answer questions about alleged profit sharing from Indiana road right of way land sales before a Senate Roads subcommittee. A former Indiana highway department official testified that special treatment for right of way purchases came from William Doggett and involved Frank M. Chapman.
