Several hundred residents of Snyder and nearby cities are expected at Lake J. B. Thomas at 2 PM for the second annual Lake Thomas Jamboree. The jamboree is sponsored by the community group.
Scurry County joins the Texas effort to cut traffic deaths with the Slow Down And Live program running through Labor Day. The plan emphasizes education along with the three E's education engineering enforcement, backed by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Local Lions Club launch coordinators and Abilene Highway Patrol support, while state road work includes a June 14 bid opening for U S 180 U S 84 and SH 101 improvements near Snyder.
Ford Motor Co rejected a union plan to settle wage differences by arbitration and prepared for a possible Monday strike. Ford official John S. Bugas accused UAW leader Walter Reuther of unfair targeting while noting Ford has matched GM offers and sought to avert a walkout before the Sunday midnight deadline.

Tornadoes and fierce winds ripped through Texas Saturday night demolishing structures, tearing down lines, and uprooting trees from Cross Cut to Brady and Brownwood. The Cross Cut twister wrecked the school gym and damaged at least 10 of 30 homes while other areas reported downed docks, a damaged water tank, and scattered hail. Weather Bureau warnings covered vast central and east Texas with multiple tornado alerts into Sunday morning.
The school board set June 28 to open bids on a new building phase for the Snyder system’s 2 million expansion. The phase adds a junior high shop arts and health studies wing and auditorium improvements, the fourth major phase as three others proceed. Buford & Feinberg of Dallas handles all bids.
The Snyder Chamber of Commerce reports a population estimate of 16 324, up more than 2 000 from last year 14 111, asking the city council to adopt the figure and request State Highway signs reflect the new limit. The council meets tomorrow to consider the motion and related actions. The chamber bases its estimate on utility connections annexations postal receipts school enrollments and other indicators. A fireman training trip to Texas A M College July 10 15 is approved, with insurance rate credits varying for the fire crew.
USC professors plan to skip commencement next Saturday if Texas Governor Allan Shivers is invited as speaker. Dr. Russell Caldwell said 136 faculty signed a petition to President Fagg urging no invitation after Student Senate pressure. the college head rejected the request. Faculty protest reflects broad opposition among faculty to Shivers as speaker.
Hermleigh residents voted to abolish the city corporation by 67 to 52 in unofficial returns announced by election judge Jim Farr. If canvassed and deemed valid, the Hermleigh city corporation will be dissolved and the county commissioners court will assume control of the city government and property including the water system.
About 100 local National Guardsmen left at 5 30 a m for North Fort Hood to attend a two week summer encampment. Capt Wel don Kincaid commands the bus fleet. Earlier 18 Snyder men joined 10 vehicles in an advance detachment from the 112th Cavalry Regiment led by Maj Bill Schiebel. Training will cover tank gunnery scouting communications and mortar use with focused platoon company and regimental work in week two. The annual mounted governor's review is Saturday.
In Austin on June 4 Rep Berry of Lubbock was listed in very serious condition following an operation at Seton Hospital for intestinal obstructions. He had earlier been injured when his automobile skidded on a slick highway about two weeks prior, returned to duties, and was admitted yesterday for treatment.
AP analysis notes Khrushchev and Bulganin praise for Tito and Belgrade, while satellite leaders face pressure for independence or liquidation. It questions Soviet claims on Titoism and the wartime leadership, suggesting a fractured collective leadership as Malenkov Molotov Beria fall from favor.
Gerald Mann of Dallas and Grover Sellers of Sulphur Springs will introduce Democratic National Committee Chairman Paul Butler at fund raising dinners in Dallas on June 15 and Tyler on June 16. The Democratic Advisory Council of Texas sponsors Butler’s Texas visit with additional stops listed in Lubbock Big Spring Abilene Waco McAllen Weslaco Corpus Christi and Houston.
North Central Texas reports cloudy skies with scattered thunderstorms on Sunday. West Texas notes cloudy to partly cloudy, cooler conditions in Panhandle and South Plains Sunday and Monday with fair, mild weather ahead. East Texas expects mainly scattered thundershowers Sunday and Monday with temperature changes and breezy southerly winds along the coast. South Central Texas remains mostly cloudy with scattered thundershowers and unknown further details.
