Sioux Falls reports a busy opening day with hunters out before daylight chasing ducks and chickens. Numerous local names credited with various bag counts while a separate police update from Canton covers a bank robbery case and arrests, noting the suspects’ attempts to hide on a riverbank and a planned escape thwarted.

Fire destroys Romberg garage in Veblen

Last Saturday evening about 4 30 a fire broke out in Frank Romberg's auto garage in Veblen. Oil spilled while repairing his touring car ignited, the structure burned rapidly before the fire department arrived. The car valued at 2000 was a total loss with no insurance on the building or vehicle.

First Hunt Accident Hits Pierre Banker Hurt Hip

Pierre September 14 The first hunting accident of the season occurred Sunday. J B Knight cashier of the Pierre National Bank received part of a charge of shot in his hip while in the field. The injury is painful but not serious and will lay him up for a time. The town hopes for a quick recovery.

Mrs J T Schain Dies After Apoplexy At State Fair

Mrs J T Schain of Browns Valley died after an apoplexy at 7 30 p m Saturday at the Minnesota state fair grounds. She died while being taken to a rest hospital in an automobile. She had been in Minneapolis four weeks. Survived by husband two sons Theodore and an attorney son and a daughter Miss Josephine Sehain of Minneapolis. Her husband was state senator from the fifty seventh district in 1903 and had served as representative and Traverse county official.

Mountain Sheep Turned Loose

Rapid City residents report twelve mountain sheep captured by Tim Nolds on the Chey river in the Bad Lands were released after sportsmen learned Reynolds had corralled them. The act violated local law forbidding capture of mountain sheep, and he is said to have freed the animals.

The pool room run by the Carlbergs has shut down and the building is now rented to new tenants. A new enterprise is expected to open there within a few weeks.

Free Land Not All Gone Opens Rosebud Pine Ridge Lands

Nearly 466 562 acres in the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indian Reservations in South Dakota are opened for homestead entry with a October 24 1917 drawing. Applications run October 2 to October 21 from Chamberlain and nearby points, with the land watered by the White River and suitable for farming and stock raising.

Fatally Burned Wife of Farmer Near Florence

Mrs Holkan, wife of Lars Holkun of a Florence farm, died after a gasoline stove exploded as she tended a burning stove. Her three children, oldest six, youngest under one, survived. a six year old girl saved a baby and fought flames. Two girls and two ranchers were arrested for grand larceny in Harding county. They were bound over to circuit court in 100 each.

Stole an Automobile in Aberdeen Sunday Morning

A dark blue 1920 Phil WL SEVOM passenger six cylinder car owned by C. Wacheller was stolen from the Spalding garage on South Lincoln street between 1 and 4 AM Sunday. The thief forced rear garage doors, moved other cars, and disappeared with the vehicle as officials across towns notified and roads watched.
