Batterton Narrowly Keeps State Attorney Seat After Canvass

Final canvass shows Batterton win reduced by one vote over Pearson who contested counts claiming irregularities in Roberts County precincts. The court rulings trimmed Batterton’s majority from twenty to nineteen, with the contest proceeding Tuesday and Wednesday. Rev Perthman plans a six month leave, visiting Palestine, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Egypt before resuming duties in South Dakota. Rev Below of Dundee, Iowa to cover in his absence.

Jones Case Trial Confidence and School Law Challenge

Hard-fought libel suits in Watertown county

In Watertown on December 22, Charles H. Schull the state’s attorney won a $500 verdict against H L Hopkins once a newspaper publisher now a real estate dealer. The case grew from the late primary campaign where Schull sought renomination as a Republican and ministers’ circulars were deemed reflective. A second libel suit is in progress with E M Barker publisher suing Hast woods publishers for $5,000 over alleged defamatory statements tied to the same primary battle and a forged county warrant accusation.

The Methodist minister Rev. Shearer left Wednesday for Aberdeen where he reportedly married Miss Baker yesterday. The Rev and his bride are expected home Christmas night and the congregation plans a warm welcome. The STANDARD offers congratulations and best wishes for a long and happy life.

Tuition required for out of district students

The city law requires parents to pay tuition for children from outside districts attending city schools. The school board, via clerk Frank Rhodes, began collection efforts, and Judge Prior issued a judgment for Sam Wolf for 26 dollars with total costs of 88 dollars and 60 cents covering tuition for 1907 and part of 1908, with Howard Babcock representing the district.

Miss Nora Freeman left yesterday for an holiday visit at Aberdeen. The ad notes a promotion offering piano contest certificates up to 100 dollars to apply to any piano purchase, valid until January 1, 1909.
