The latest importation by the Silver Lead Association to the Payne mine encounters disaster as only one of thirty four reaches its destination. Managers pursue scattered workers across Minnesota and Michigan, with searches underway to complete the missing crew and secure replacements.
A long letter from A. M. Beatty of the Beatty Employment Agency discusses sending dozens of men to the Kootenays and Slocan areas over the past weeks. He claims most workers found work, though some lacked funds, and notes distinctions between Kootenay and Slocan postings. The letter is continued on the third page.
The Hewett Group, about four miles from Silverton, advances from prospect to mine with 800 feet of underground development. Main tunnels include 216 feet upper and 875 feet lower, with a pay streak of quartz rich ore yielding 80 to 600 ounces of silver per ton. Ore is daily sacked and shipped. ten workers, soon more, with a new rail link to the surface.
The Freddy claim near Nelson lies below the Noonday property and near Galena Mines road. A tunnel on the ledge exposes mineral at 400 feet below the wagon bridge with a streak of mineral on the footwalls and a vein strike east west dipping north at about 69 degrees. The Freddy is described as a potential Silverton shipper contributing to a chain of mines from the Lake shore to the Vancouver Group over five miles.
The Get-there-Eli group on Twelve Mile Creek is stocked by Vancouver interests as the W. M. Mining Company. A large block of treasury stock planned for the Toronto market has found buyers, and a mining force under Mr. Debe will start work at once with a goal to ship ore soon.
A Sandon meeting of Sandon and nearby town merchants formed to mediate between the Mine Owners Association and the Miners' Union. A committee was named to urge a conference and push for a one year wage agreement of 3.25 per shift for hammermen with no discrimination in hiring or dismissal. The move aims to reopen negotiations and speed a peaceful settlement.
Fragmentary report shows ore shipments from Silverton for 1899 and lake point totals up to early 1900. Entries reference Bosun Landing and Vancouver routes with tons of ore and per ton values, though many figures are garbled.
A grand dance at the Victoria Hotel dining room drew many visitors from Slocan City and New Denver. The Silverton Orchestra provided lively music, with a local ensemble led by Miss Doncan, Bintis, and Zanmernan praised as the best in Slovan. Refreshments pleased sixty guests, and dancing continued until the early hours.
The Local Layout lists the Miners Union Ball in Slocan City next Friday and a Licences Commissioners meeting in New Dover on the 26th. Events include the KP’s third Annual Ball on the 2241 inst in New Denver, and a Sunday diving service at Silver Fen at 7 30. Also notes jewelry repair drop at Silverton Drug Store and a literary society update with The Search Fight and Livertonian notices.
One of the New Denver delegates to the Business Men's meeting in Sandon spent his first night away from Windy City in five years. He found Sandon unchanged on his return Wednesday and remarked that if the world grows larger toward Sandon it is a mighty big world.
