Underground Forests and Fuel Use on Comstock Lode
The Virginia Chronicle notes 60 mines on the Comstock Lode between 1869 and 1880, all using steam hoists and pumping plants. The Virginia & Truckee ran 40 daily trains from Washoe City to supply fuel and timber, totaling about 600 cords daily and 5,190,000,000 feet over ten years. About half of that was for timbering, creating a vast underground gallery hundreds of miles long. Four thousand workers were employed from 1874 to 1879.
