Glencoe Battle Reports Boer Attack and Symons Wounding

British dispatches from Glencoe describe a dawn assault by about four thousand Boers with guns on a hill east of the camp. After shelling failed to damage, Allied infantry advanced, taking the position by 1:30 PM. Sir William Symons is wounded and considered possibly fatally.

Fiend Burned at the Stake in Mississippi

A posse captured Joe Lestore who confessed that he and Bob Anderson killed a Mississippi family at St Annes J H Gam brill house. The pair tied the family, piled a feather mattress with oil, cremated them and robbed the house. Lestore was burned at the stake. Anderson was captured and partly burned but survived after a delay in the fire.

Columbia Defeats Shamrock To Retain Americas Cup

In a brisk 18 to 20 knot breeze on October 20 New York, Columbia defeated the challenger Shamrock in the third international series, retaining the cup for the United States. The defender launched from the start ahead, battled bow to bow near the outer mark, and finished about seven seconds ahead in official time, with a sizable overall lead by the finish.

Three insurgent officers entered Angeles and asked General MacArthur for a Filipino commission headed by a Filipino Major General to visit General Otis to discuss peace terms and the exchange of prisoners. The request was sent to General Otis and the officers are to return tomorrow for his reply.
