Measurements of the Columbia and its equipment
Parties present during the measurement of the Columbia noted the vessel. After initial measurement 1700 pounds of lead were added to her head to replace interior fittings removed. Water line measured again at 89 feet 8 inches and a small fraction. The Columbia's main boom is 105 feet long, identical to the Defender. The Columbia's spar has also been used by Defender.
Andree Polar Expedition Buoy Found on King Charles Island
The buoy marked Andree Polar Expedition with an anchor was found September 6 on King Charles Island's north coast by the Norwegian cutter Martha Larsaak's master. It was opened in Stockholm with experts and cabinet members present and identified as the North Pole buoy Andree planned to drop if he reached the pole.
