Transport Manauense Narrow Escape Near Manila

The transport Manauense carrying Colonel Webb Hayes and three companies of the Thirty first Infantry arrived in Manila after a perilous voyage. The ship was under manned and short of provisions, with engines failing and a three day typhoon. Crew deserted, leaving less than half aboard. bailing by buckets and improvised pumps kept the ship afloat, while darkness and equipment failures plagued the voyage.
