London rumor mill reports the American squadron may have destroyed the Spanish Cape Verde fleet after a rumored meeting with the Spanish forces. No official confirmation yet.
Washington may 24 the navy department says no news of any engagement between the American and Spanish fleets has been received and no notice of the Oregon’s arrival at Key West has been received.
In New York on May 24 the German consul in Manila warned of provisioning a ship under German warship protection. Admiral Dewey warned he would shell any German vessels that obstructed operations. The plan was abandoned.
