Mining News Briefs From Nevada and Surrounding Areas

Ore shipments last week totaled 105 tons from Eureka and 19 tons from White Pine. A strike of horn silver ore was reported at the Lorin mine in Bryan City Washoe County. Gardner mine near Carson to be incorporated for development with funds from stock. Wedekind ships steadily, about one car every two days, while Reno Star mine aims for 40 tons daily of $75 rock. Colonel Boyle prep for tunneling at North Rapidan mine Como with June 1 drive resumption, tunnel to reach 3,600 feet. Copper King mine in Searchlight faces water at 520 feet with pumping. a 16 mile railroad to the mill planned. Southern Nevada Mining Company’s Spokane property in Searchlight shows rich ore. pumping planned to deepen. Minor flat shipments of 1–5 tons continue, yielding high gold returns despite freight.

Sheepshearers Robbed in Evanston Union Pacific Yard

In Evanston Wyoming eight sheep shearers returning from Rock Springs were held up by two men in the Union Pacific yards. Each man was robbed of 50 to 100 dollars as they tried to ride home in a boxcar. The robbers forced the men to surrender their belongings then locked them inside and fled.

Mrs McKinley Improves. Cabinet Holds Informal Meetings

A San Francisco dispatch reports Secretary Cortelyou says Mrs. McKinley had the best night since illness and shows very satisfactory progress. Doctors Rixey Gibbons Hirschfelder and Cushing met with her and left satisfied. Cabinet members discuss public questions daily, with informal meetings at the Scott residence, as Mrs. McKinley heals and a travel date remains uncertain for about a week.

Pan-American Exposition Dedication and Global News

The Pan-American exposition was formally dedicated yesterday. The Shamrock I won the trial race off the Isle of Wight by about a minute. Colorado towns Victor, Goldfield, Alta Loma and Anaconda face water famine after the Victor reservoir burst, threatening mine closures. In Osceola Town, Elmer Lane attacked his wife, cutting her throat and attempting suicide. Mrs Lane is in critical condition, as domestic troubles prompted divorce proceedings. A machinists strike went national with 650 Union Iron Works workers in San Francisco out, threatening prolonged disruption. In St Louis County, Mrs. Elmer Quinby poisoned her two children and herself. she survives, facing murder charges amid family trouble. Andrew Carnegie donated 200000 pounds to fund free education for Scottish students in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, and St Andrews, excluding non-Scots. The fund covers medical and commercial studies and is run by trustees.
