Aguinaldo cabled from Hong Kong that the Filipino government will continue the war until independence is secured. They reject American autonomy terms and demand full adherence to the American Constitution, with generals supporting Aguinaldo and claims of peace overtures by Lava are untrue.
The United States Supreme Court ruled that the French steamer Olina Rodrigues be returned to its owners, the first naval prize money case from the Spanish American War era to reach the court. The decision, announced by Chief Justice Fuller, held the vessel seized off San Juan Puerto Rico on July 17, and found no proven intent by its officers to enter the blockaded port, while affirming the San Juan blockade as effective.

Logan Utah May 15 Orson Smith president of the Cache county stake of the Mormon Church left two weeks ago. He owes farmers around thirty thousand dollars and owned a large elevator in Logan. It is believed he has gone to the Klondike. Smith was born in Iowa and named stake president in 1890 and postmaster at Logan by McKinley last November. He also represented the Studebaker Company in Cache Valley.
At the Southern Baptist Convention H. H. Gambrill B H Carroll from Texas and K B Campbell of Georgia were named fraternal messengers to San Francisco for the National Baptist anniversary. RK Davison ex mayor of Baltimore to represent the Southern Convention in the English-speaking Baptist delegation seeking an end to persecution of Russian Baptists. In Chicago St Louis citizens plan to protest Congress over Alger's approval to open the Drainage Canal.

Chicago May 16 The Federal Committee at the Chicago National Festival has issued invitations signed by 160 citizens for President Diaz of Mexico Lord Minto and their cabinets to meet President McKinley and his cabinet at the Federal Building cornerstone ceremonies on October 9. A special envoy in Ottawa has received assurance from both Lord Minto and President Diaz that they will accept. Havana May 15 General Maximo Gomez informed Governor General Brooke he could no longer act as the Cuban Army’s representative in distributing 3 million dollars for Cuban troops. He cited a cabal of subordinates opposing him and thwarting the money’s partition, and announced he would withdraw to let Brooke proceed alone. A manifesto to the army was planned, with Brooke ready to declare his own course afterward.
