Dewey's official dispatch to Hong Kong arrives detailing the destruction of the Spanish fleet of eleven vessels and control of Manila. At sea three hundred Spaniards are killed and four hundred wounded while no American lives were lost. Six American sailors are slightly wounded.
The navy department released Dewey's cipher dispatches from May 1 and May 4 detailing the Manila battle. The squadron engaged and destroyed multiple Spanish ships, took Cavite naval station, and claimed control of the city and fortifications with the fleet in excellent health and spirits.
A rumor from Loxpox dated May 7 claims the Washington naval strategic board notified Britain of intentions toward the Canary Islands. It suggests the second class cruiser Charubis is en route to Los Palos and implies Rear Admiral Sampson may attack the Canary Islands to draw Spain’s fleet from Cadiz or provide a base to strike at Spain.
The Chronicle reports powers aim to confine the conflict to current participants and expect few large battles. Influence is already used to push for amicable intervention and eventual concessions from Spain.
The War Department announces the volunteer army will include seven corps each led by a major general. Mobilization sites are expected at Fort Monroe Virginia Chickamauga Tennessee Atlanta Georgia Richmond Virginia and Long Island New York.
San Francisco May 7 Tom Sharkey the undefeated world champion was knocked out in the twentieth round by Jim Jeffries at the Mechanics Pavilion under the National Athletic Club. The bout ended with Jeffries securing the victory in a decisive finish.
Kingston dispatch reports four Spanish warships seen offshore near Jamaica New York forming part of the Spanish flotilla.
The Mallory line steamer Alamo arrived from New York with cadets for engineers. Firemen and coal parsers refused to sail to Cuba claiming insufficient protection. Chief engineer ordered arrests and a guard, mutiny soon fizzled as the crew weakened.

A letter from Madrid dated May 7 reports cries against the civil guard during the recent military celebrations of Murat's defeat. The piece notes the civil guard as a backbone of the Spanish government at home and contends that such protests indicate significant sedition gaining ground.
In London the Spanish embassy denies a claim that the queen regent plans to abdicate. A Chicago contract for one million dollars in rations to Chattanooga is issued.
