London March 9 The War Office releases Lord Roberts dispatch from Poplar Grove dated Friday morning March 9 reporting Presidents Kruger and Steyn at the front during the March 7 clash. They attempted to rally their troops though the rout was complete as British artillery and a strong cavalry force proved overwhelming.

Respite Telephoned For Innocent Man Schafer

In Helena Montana on March 9 a temporary reprieve for Joseph Schafer, the innocent man under death sentence at Butte, was telephoned to the Butte Sheriff by Lieutenant Governor Spriggs. He will sign when he reaches Butte so the Supreme Court may review Schafer appeal. The telephonic reprieve is to avoid mailing delays.

Tramp Saved From Mob Moves to Jail

In Marion Indiana on March 9 Fred Dunker the tramp who attacked Mrs Henry Wise six miles south of Marion was hidden by guards and moved to Wabash jail to protect him from an angry mob that twice sought to seize him. The mob demonstrated violently last night and nearly reclaimed the prisoner.
