Portians Oregon Dispatch Reports Salmon River Attack
A Leweston special to the Oregonian dated June 21 relays that Pike Davenport John Howard and two others from Mount Idaho arrived at 11 PM reporting the murder of Mrs Menwell and a George Woodward child on Salmon River. Fortified families at Slate Creek defend about 40 men while Chapman and 65 volunteers march from Mount Idaho to locate Indians near Salmon River. Charles Henton of volunteers was killed. One thousand cartridges reach Mount Idaho. steamer New Tenino brings 107 troops. about 50 volunteers arrive from Columbia awaiting arms. Lew Day is dead. General Howard reports losses and reinforcements, noting Florence blocked the Little Salmon trail and urging patience for results.

In a New Year filing, Tilden’s defense seeks to deny all allegations. His counsel will file an answer arguing the government accepted reported income as conclusive and that missing returns for other years were handled by the assessor’s estimates. The defendant plans to demur to the first count outlining the tax amount.
