In Raleigh on June 29 1844 Clay urged tariffs on foreign imports to fund minimal government while protecting domestic industry. Polk in a June 19 1844 letter advocated a revenue tariff with limited protective duties. Both views are nearly identical and the 1894 question mirrors the 1844 dispute as leaders rally for office.
The 1856 remark urges bold action when danger looms with explosive risk. It contrasts timid counsel with decisive daring, urging those who delay to be seen as incendiaries and promotes a hard but necessary path to safety.
A Bloomington Iowa farmer writes that men do not consider God or heaven until death nears and ignore political interests until financial ruin looms. He warns that the dull man will not act even when death stares him in the face.
