rioters strike disrupts Manhattan streetcar service on Metropolitan system. Motormen and conductors walk out on Second Avenue and other lines, pulling trains, blocking tracks, and prompting arrests. Police and state mediation groups respond as violence erupts and dynamite rumors surface amid the labor dispute.
July 1 in Brooklyn New York transit grinds to halt as Brooklyn Rapid Transit reports 50 to 90 percent of surface lines active at night but none reach Brighton Beach since the strike began. A dynamite blast damaged a Fifth Avenue elevated structure but repairs allowed limited service. Accused loiterers arrested in East New York plead not guilty in Adams Street court.
Rome dispatch reports Mount Etna erupting this morning after loud subterranean noises. Crater emitted dense smoke and huge sand clouds. a 2:20 am earthquake was followed by aftershocks. Shocks caused minor damage near Rome, with greater impact at Kovedi Papa village and Castel Gandolfo. no fatalities reported.
London July 19. Mary Ann Ansell, convicted of murdering her sister in an insane asylum by poisoning cake to claim life insurance, was hanged at St Albans after failed appeals to secure a reprieve. The case centered on a policy taken out on her sister’s life with a false description.
Cowra reports splendid weather as Shamrock, challenger for the American cup, competes against the Titanicurntia amid large crowds ashore and on the water.
National Democrats arrive in Chicago to attend the committee’s meeting at Sherman House. Williams of Massachusetts and Tomlinson of Alabama lead a group of advisers while ex Gouvernor Lone of Missouri chairs in Senator Jones’s absence. Kentuckians Blackburne and Goebel among expected attendees as Bryan’s Auditorium affair decision looms.
Anti Goebel Democrats in Bowling Green and surrounding county issue a July 24 meeting call to protest W. J. Goebel for governor and the Louisville convention. They condemn the convention as perverted by fraud and arbitrary chairmen, urging a true Democratic ticket and majority rule.
J B Mc Gugin a Faro dealer from Reno Nev arrived two weeks ago and was found dead yesterday evening in the Dewey Lodging House at 47 Stuart street. He shot himself in the mouth with a .44 caliber pistol. Mc Gugin had taken the room to sleep all day and left letters suggesting his affairs were in order though stomach trouble and possible despondency are cited as motives.
President will accept Alger's resignation and secretary will retire as McKinley faces political turmoil described in a round robin dispute. No further details available in readable text.
Secretary Alger met with President McKinley at the White House but declined to discuss the Manila round robin or comment on Hobart’s Normanhurst meeting. General Anderson publicly denied quoting any such statement about Philippine independence, insisting his Manila role was strictly military and that no nation had recognized the Filipino government.
Secretary of War Alger has submitted his resignation to take effect at the pleasure of the President. The President will accept the resignation and the Secretary will retire at an early day.
The report by Austin G. Fox and Wallace MacFarlane, signed by Governor Roosevelt, finds no criminal fault by former State Engineer Adams or former Superintendent Aldridge over the nine millions canal improvements. It states evasions were by the engineering department but within the law. Aldridge is exempt. nearly all responsibility lies with the engineering corps. Cleveland July 19 There was little change in the street car strike today with cars running at irregular intervals and no new violence since last night. A switch at Murray Hill was blown by a dynamite charge. Big Consolidated Company president Everett says there is nothing to arbitrate and that workers will be replaced by incoming men from other cities within days. The strikers plan a public statement tomorrow.
Havana reports widespread drought reducing Cuba's sugar maturation and delaying harvests. Planters prepare large fall plantings while tobacco remains unsold to buyers at minimal profits. Santa Clara notes the worst drought in eighteen years as September and October rains are forecast to ease shortages.
Emperor William of Germany spent an hour with Mr. Howard Gould aboard the Niagara at Molde Norway. He departed on the Hohenzollern as the Niagara left the harbor. The voyage featured a flag salute and a show of American colors. Meanwhile the Venezuelan Commission did not meet today and will convene Friday.

Ex Senator N P Hm, manager of the Boston and Colorado Smelter, testifies opposing trusts while supporting labor organization to sustain wages and opposing an eight hour law. he notes workers in his smelters favor ten to twelve hour shifts.

Canada rallies, money eases, and bank rate expectations diminish while bankers accept more bills. Japanese money release aids short loan market and Transvaal tensions ease, lifting overall market mood.
Portland July 19 General Charles Beebe reports Secretary Alger telegram to General Shafter San Francisco granting full power to act in the matter.
The State Department was informed through the Portuguese Charge that the reciprocity arrangement under the Dingley Tariff Act between the United States and Portugal will be published in Lisbon today. It is an arrangement rather than a full treaty and will take effect upon Presidential proclamation.
Washington July 19 Chief Justice Chambers of Samoa has not advised the State Department of any resignation and officials report no official word from Chambers or the Samoan Commission. The fight among throne aspirants appears minor with German and British naval arrests of malcontents. If true, his resignation would align with the untenable post after the Samoan Commissioners' conclusion and may date to his U S arrival. The Municipal Council president could assume duties if vacancy occurs, pending treaty powers negotiations after the Commission reports.
Port Huron Michigan July 1 The fight for supreme office in the Knights of the Maccabbees ends with George J Siegel of Buffalo elected Supreme Record Keeper and D P Markey reelected Supreme Commander Major Boynton to chair the appeals committee. Boynton withdraws late but remains a power in the organization. Dr Ransom Ey Mons is re elected Supreme Medical Examiner over Dr D E Wolf. Also reported is the chartering of the County Belt Railway of St Louis by the Missouri Secretary of State, a 1 million dollar line encircling the city.
