London dispatches report that General Buller’s forces may be in full retreat as rumors spread from Natal. War Office officials decline comment while casualties mount for Buller and Warren. Roberts in Cape Town faces renewed pressure as Kimberley and Ladysmith threaten.
London reports the War Office has no news of a catastrophe to General Buller’s forces or formal explanation for Spionkop’s abandonment. No signs of major northern developments in the colony. General French linked with Gatacre may presage a combined advance according to Roberts’ plan.
London dispatches report a gloomy view of the Tugela situation with general belief that General Buller's movements have failed both on the frontal and flank actions. The War Office is said to be withholding news from the public.
Berlin January 27. Telegram from Pretoria claims General Warren was lured into Spienkop where Boer forces attacked. Seventeen of his cannons allegedly captured and Buller’s retreat over the Tugela seen as the only chance of salvation. British losses given as 800 killed and 1,500 wounded, though credibility is low.
British forces with 40 000 troops attempt the Spionrop route to Ladysmith as fire from General Botha's position intensifies. The engagement features heavy shelling, grass burning, rock dislodgement, and trench damage amid ongoing battle conditions.
A largely one sided exchange describes Federals firing about thirty shots with a shell ball hitting General Botha in the pocket. Boer losses were limited to wounded horses as firing paused at dark and renewed at dawn with little vigor near Ladysmith.

Insurgent headquarters now at San Fernando De Apure with a popular triumvirate backing Hernandez as he advances from the Colombian frontier amid public acclaim for a pacificator against the anarchist element.
In Frankfort, Van Meter defeats Berry for the Legislature seat 51 to 45, seen as a forecast of the Goebel Taylor contest result. In Denver, a three story Lawrence Street building housing Hover & Co. collapses, with $50,000 plus stock loss but no injuries.

In the Fifth Judicial District Court Humboldt County Nevada notice is given that B Recanzone petitions for an order authorizing the administrator to sell all real estate of Charles Senghas deceased to pay debts and expenses. The hearing is February 15 1900 at Winnemucca at 10 o clock A M. J T Dunn Clerk of Said Court.
