Republican Party Blamed for Trusts in House Debate
In Washington on December 17 Mr Miers of Indiana offered an amendment opposing the financial bill provisions and the national banks to issue currency. He condemned the gold standard and argued greenbacks should rise above government control. He cited two hundred trust monsters with seven billion dollars capital post McKinley and Dingley. Sulzer Grosvenor and Cannon joined a sharp debate. Sulzer accused the administration of backing trusts and cited the Chicago anti trust conference condemning the money trust. He noted former Ohio Attorney General Monnett led the conference against Standard Oil, and urged Republicans to back the financial bill to spur action. Grosvenor mocked Sulzer’s presidential ambitions and quipped about Sulzer’s trip home to Washington.
