President McKinley heads to Philadelphia for the Grant statue unveiling ceremony. A large crowd gathers along the river route as ships and ferries vie for vantage points, honoring the dead hero with patriotic displays and a formal ceremony.
The equestrian General Grant statue, gifted by the Fairmount Park Art Association, was unveiled in Philadelphia with President McKinley and Mrs. Grant in attendance. Crowds lined the route as the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry escorted the party to Bellevue, and a national salute marked the moment of unveiling.
General OL 8 reports numerous casualties from the Puilipuiae Islands with several named fallen and wounded. Names include Thomas Anderson James Callahan Reaul Man éhan Lenny Elkine Tatten Clay Dagvey Ball Geabner Knox Harris Selmer Blake and Emil Selmer in severest cases. Abraham Moore of Superior Nebraska is arrested in Chicago on an indictment for obtaining 1000 by false pretenses from Streban Funtoon Krand Commission. Moore allegedly claimed 100 cattle at South Omaha and mortgaged the lot. loan later proven improper.
New York April 27 Silver certificates representing 40000 ounces sold on the stock exchange at 65. to 64. cents with commercial bar at 63 3 4. Analysts call the rise speculative, noting no clear demand increase and possible manipulation from foreign interests. A separate dispatch from Elko Idaho reports Indian Agent Mayhugh recounting a violent incident at a Shoshone reservation school leading to arrests and federal warrants.
United States transport Commal, capt Evans, arrived from Havana with 64 passengers and 150 discharged soldiers. Among them are ex Governor of South Carolina John Evans and Cuba Post System Director-General Eales G. Rathbone. Captain Evans reports sighting a dismasted boat 25 miles north of Jupiter light, with two men signaling in distress. They, K Banfield and J Kewh of Kamana, had sailed from a small boat aiming for Nasewu but weather sank their craft. After three days adrift, the Commal rescued them and brought them to port.
The body of Mitchell Daniel, a negro, was found in a road near Leesburg, Georgia, riddled with bullets. He and others had recently spoken against the Laramore family and others, amid claims of complicity in a past lynching. A group of three negroes earlier attempted to force entry into Mrs. William Laramore’s room. help arrived and the intruders fled, but the dogged pursuit continued before the case escalated. The Laramore home was later fired upon following the outrage.
Washington April 27 Rear Admiral Howell has been retired as senior member of the Naval Retiring Board. He will be succeeded by Admiral Sedley formerly on the Naval Examining Board. Captain Cook, recalled after his wife’s death, joins the Naval Examining Board as Commander W A Meade takes command of the Brooklyn. Sheridan S Hook dies at Red Hook aged 77. He formerly owned the Union Sete Theater and Morton House.
An April 27 tornado 20 miles east of Onawa Iowa swept the farming country. Three people were killed Hans Severson Perrin and an unknown man. James Amerson carried half a mile survived. Homes destroyed blotting out Peter Peterson Amer son and Han e Severson homes and farms. A child ten died, parents and five sisters gravely injured.
Details from Apia dated April 18 describe fierce clashes at Vailelo between Mataafa loyalists and native rebels. Ensign J. R. Monaghan and Lt. P. Y. Lansdale of the Philadelphia were killed. Monaghan was beheaded after retreating. German influence and arms trades cited as fueling the conflict. British, American, and German forces staged attacks near Falita and Nailelma with heavy casualties on both sides and German flag captured. Refugees flood Malietea, and traders flee Apia as naval forces conduct punitive moves.
Navy reports from Admiral Kaute that coal cannot be obtained at Apia and must be ordered from Auckland. He says calm at Apia, will protect U S property and consulate, and that coal supplies have been arranged to be delivered. De Buelow, who organized forces at Matasie, has left Samoa for Tonga Islands.
