F. M. Downing has purchased the furniture stock of M. W. Arnold and plans to establish a new local business. Downing is described as a young, energetic merchant whose venture will enhance the town’s trade. See his ad in this issue.

A horse belonging to H. C. Cauffman broke loose from a hitching rack in front of the bank on Main Street. It pulled a single buggy southward toward the Nickel Plate track and left the buggy to steer its own course, causing bystanders to mistake it for an approaching automobile.
Eighteen improved desks for first and second year pupils were purchased with donations from parents including Thomas Col bert Embra Kinsey M. E. Loehr Dr W S Leiter S B Whittenberger Dr E kh Haworth J H Yeoman W W Worley Charles Miller Frank Miller Lev Beigh and George Pontius. Township trustees covered 30 percent of costs while the school board contributed to the total. Total seats cost 39.30 with 11.79 paid by township and 13.51 by the board.
The Burket area Democratic clubs plan a large rally on Tuesday October 30 with Chas P Drummond Plymouth candidate for attorney general to speak at 2 PM. Nearby towns are urged to send delegates as Claypool Mentone bands and Burket glee club provide music.
Burglars entered W. V. Linn’s shop Friday night by boreing out a panel in the east door. They took seven or eight pocket knives and two razors using tools once kept at the Nickel Plate car house. This is the second time the same tools have been stolen.

Rural free mail delivery begins November 1 1900 in Claypool Kosciusko County Indiana with Route No 1 from the Claypool post office. The route lists town sections 17 29 30 24 23 26 27 30 18 17 20 22 15 and ends back at Claypool covering 224 miles serving 787 people with 175 households. Carrier Charles Colbert directs delivery to boxes provided by residents and emphasizes secure weatherproof boxes and visible signals to summon delivery.
Seybold and Dicksted of Sheffield England, the largest crucible steel makers in Britain, consider moving their plant to the United States. A site with good water and shipping near Wheeling West Virginia is optioned for a modern facility costing over 3 million dollars and employing about 3,500 workers from the start. The move aims to enter the American market, with rising English coal costs cited as a key incentive.
A large crowd gathered for a Republican rally after a fair morning. The procession started at the depot led by the Claypool band and the Warsaw mixed band, circling town to the M E church where flowers waited for speakers from Nebraska and Utah. The strike that began September 17 ends as the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron company and Lehigh Valley Coal company agree to abolish the sliding scale and grant a ten percent wage rise. The increase lasts until April 1, 1901, or thereafter, meeting Scranton miners' convention demands after talks among operators and major coal carriers.
Former senator John Sherman died at his Washington residence on Monday morning from brain exhaustion. President McKinley attended the funeral arrangements. his estate is valued at about one million dollars. Sherman was born May 10, 1823 in Lancaster Ohio. Mr and Mrs G W Shipley visited North Manchester this week with their daughter Mrs Shoemaker.
