Count Sachio of Grahoffen urges the king’s approval to find hidden coins and scripts under Gretzhoffen. He threads subterranean halls seeking the treasure, but after hours of searching he realizes a wrong turn may doom him, while Kitty Gray and Count Frederick remain distant and unresolved.
Count Frederick and Kitty Gray flee a cavern beneath a lava hill pursued by natives. An old sailor, Jim Wainwright, sacrifices himself defending them as they reach a cliff edge above the sea. They survive the night with dwindling food and water, vowing to endure hunger together if needed.
