Elder Simona of the U B church delivered a memorial sermon on memorial day blending church and state in a single service. Despite bad weather a good audience heard a strengthening, uplifting message that praised old comrades and linked sacramental rites with the quarterly conference.
A beautiful Decoration Day with clear skies and mild weather. The day saw business suspended 9 to 4 and flags adorning homes and stores. A parade led by the band moved from the church to Lakeview cemetery where flower offerings were laid on soldier graves. Reverends Wright Rittenhouse and Hill led services and solos were performed by Mrs Wright and Mrs Walter.
An elderly woman asked for two cent stamps and inquired about discounts. The postmaster offered a larger value, eighty two dollars, claiming a nice margin. She bought only enough to mail her letters and left, while the note jokes that eighty two worth guarantees a profitable resale margin if the postmaster is in the mood.
Abraham Armey of Montgomery county Ohio born August 10 1836 died May 26 1907 at his son Levi Armey residence in Milford after a period of ill health and mental instability. He leaves one son and two daughters. The body was brought to Gospel Hill church for funeral services conducted by Rev Kain and interred at Gospel Hill cemetery.
Samuel S. Reed of near Disko and Trella M. Rhodes of northeast of this place were united in marriage at the county clerk’s office in Warsaw last week.
Former Silver Lake girl Roxie Fern Rhodes married Arthur Shoup at St Joseph Michigan on November 19 1906. The ceremony remained secret until the groom returned from Salt Lake Utah. They will reside in Elkhart Indiana. The bride has many local relatives including her grandmother Elizabeth Rhodes in South Silver Lake.
Edward Scherer, east of town, reports seven lambs killed by dogs last Sunday night. This is the second raid on his herd and he has not yet been able to kill any of the guilty canines.
Frank Drudge was fined one dollar and costs 36.60 for assault and battery on Frank Nelson in Justice Barrett's court. Nelson was fined 5.85 on a counter charge. A day earlier a dispute led to an encounter in which Nelson sustained a sprained shoulder.
Robert Jennings of Wabash, son of Mel Jennings, visiting J L Arthur and family. He previously worked as a telegraph operator in western states and Utah. Jennings and partner locate a claim in Grand County Mining District LaSalle mountains showing gold silver copper and manganese with test deposits.
Mr and Mrs J E Wagner of East Sycamore Street welcomed an eight pound baby girl on Monday May 27 1907 Dr Cary reports a baby girl born to Mr and Mrs Charles Gieger five miles west of Silver Lake on Saturday May
The legislature’s recent session mandates that school trustees display the United States flag on all national and state holidays at public school buildings. Rules for care and display are to be set, and if the flag is not displayed it must be placed conspicuously in the principal's room or assembly hall.
Postmaster Henry A. Ferree reports a Washington notice requiring all outgoing mail at the local post office to be weighed for six months from July through December 1907. An estimate of the distance each piece travels will be kept during this period.
Dr. D. W. McNamary from the South Bend Health Board urges spring fumigation with formaldehyde gas to disinfect houses before moving furniture. The plan uses ten quart pails with 40 percent formaldehyde and permanganate to generate gas, sealing rooms for hours, but warns to remove plants and pets.
A L Sundy of near Etna Green visited last week to discuss selling his farm and buying a larger 150 acre property. He has steadily expanded holdings and, by prudent investments, shows rising real estate value. Known as Think, he has sold oxen profitably and expects about $500 net from the current sale. next purchase likely brings further gains. He is described as a hustler with hard work and honorable dealings in all transactions.
