A dramatic temperature swing in early May 1923 brought a late snowstorm. After a warm spell with pleasant days, rain and snow caused drifting and several vehicles to become stuck. Despite heavy frost, spring crops survived and conditions looked to improve as snow melted and temperatures rose.
Mr and Mrs Joe McKown traveled to Danville Illinois Sunday for a several days visit with friends They had previously lived there for a long time before moving to their current home
A 220000 acre tract in Coos and Douglas counties Oregon was opened to entry by former service men last Friday. Entries are limited to 160 acres and after 91 days the lands will open to the general public.
Stephen Hill of three miles northeast of town was arraigned in Mayor Sloane's Warsaw court on selling a quart of moonshine to two North Manchester youths. He was fined 100 dollars and sentenced to 30 days at the penal farm, with an appeal to the circuit court pending a later hearing.
Information reached Wednesday that I. W. Lattimer, a fire department member, died in Alliance Ohio about a week earlier likely from heart trouble while at a fire. His wife and daughter were in Florida and a son in California. Mrs. Lattimer, his widow, is noted as a daughter of W. E. Wood who is in Illinois.
Charles Dancer of Wakarusa visits his old home area for a couple of days at the John Fitton residence. He recalls Silver Lake where his parents resided near town and the Frank Alexander family now lives, noting he spent much of his boyhood in the area.
Mrs. W. A. Engle and her son, returning from Kokomo, spent last Friday in town. They have many friends here and have stayed at the hotel for the past two summers and will be guests again this summer.
LeRoy Shirks and Charles Aby received 2 to 14 year sentences in Jeffersonville Tuesday at Warsaw. The youths from Ohio had stolen W. H. Beebe’s car east of Warsaw, tried to flee to California on a motorcycle, and were captured in Iowa after leaving a gas station without paying. They were returned to Warsaw Monday.
A call to observe Mother's Day on May 13 by wearing a flower to honor mothers living or dead. The piece urges children to appreciate mothers, noting their self denying sacrifices and urging attendance at church or Sunday school while expressing enduring affection through red or white flowers.
Lake township Sunday School convention will be held at Center A. B. Church north of here on Sunday May 20. Hon. D. H. Hogg of Fort Wayne will be present to give an address. The program is described as entertaining and instructive with a large crowd expected and representation from every township church.
J Frank Long of Columbia City had been out on bond since his April bootlegging conviction when he appeared before Judge last Thursday, was formally sentenced to 90 days on the penal farm, and paid a total of 166 dollars in fines and costs.
A special meeting of the Women's Home Missionary Society will be held next Tuesday evening at the M E church. Mrs Day of Huntington will attend and give an address. All are warmly invited and a large crowd is hoped for.

The Manchester College Choral Society performed a recital in the High School Auditorium on Tuesday evening. An excellent program delighted a fair crowd despite inclement weather keeping many away.
Samuel Floor died last Saturday night at his home six miles southwest of here after a yearlong illness from anemia. He was about 58 and longtime resident of the South Pleasant area. Funeral services were held Monday at the South Pleasant church, with burial nearby. He left a widow Rosetta Lambert and several children and siblings, including Mrs. Mary J. Hill and John Floor.
Mrs Roy Merkle died at her home four miles northeast of here Sunday night after a week of illness. She was 24, daughter of Ezra and Mrs Metzger, granddaughter of Abe Metzger. She leaves a newborn daughter, husband, parents, a brother Joe Metzger and sister Lucile Metzger. Funeral was Wednesday at 10 in Claypool M E Church with burial at Claypool Cemetery.
Misa Freda Tucker returned to her home southeast of town last Friday after spending the winter in Florida. She enjoyed similar warm weather and notes that tourists by the hundreds visited during the season.
Mr and Mrs Samuel Bashore returned to their east town home Sunday after weeks with their daughter Mrs Win Warner in Mentone. Mrs Bashore had been in poor health for months and the Mentone stay improved her condition. now she is said to be getting along nicely since the move home.
Miss Chloe Haney of this place and Max Glaser of Cleveland Ohio wed recently and have visited several points since. Mrs Glaser now stays here with her family while Mr Glaser recently went to Cleveland and the east for business. They may settle in Chicago as their permanent home.
A sizable crowd attended a lakeside ball game last Sunday forenoon. Funds are being subscribed to organize a solid team with a diamond amphitheatre and a floating stadium planned. Several cities have already inquired about hosting games locally.
Ford car sales rise as local dealer struggles to stock inventory. Three trucks and three coupes arrived from Chicago at the start of the week, reflecting ongoing monthly increases in demand and shipments.
Bids opened Friday in Warsaw for a Pierceton school project estimated at 89000 dollars. Noah Frantz, living east of town, likely awarded the contract with a general bid of 81866 and total including furnace wiring and plumbing of 105746. The single story brick steel concrete structure will replace the burned old building on the same site and is expected ready by next spring.
Seven year old William Montel, son of Mr and Mrs Fred Montel, died at home in Warsaw last Friday after several weeks of spinal meningitis. Private funeral held Saturday afternoon and burial in Alrey cemetery five miles east of town.
In Wabash a man severely beat his wife with a hammer early Monday, fracturing her skull and leaving Minnie Hart in serious condition in hospital. After the attack the husband shot himself in the alley behind the house, dying instantly. Insane jealousy reported as motive. he leaves five children.
Autos owned by Jacob Strickler of North Manchester and Scott Lawrence collided at a local lumber yard one evening last week. Lawrence’s car was operated by his niece Mrs. Grant Harris. no injuries were reported though both vehicles sustained damage and were sent to garages for repairs.
Albert Zimmerman of Chicago was in town for a couple of days late last week to handle business and attend to work on his farm southwest of town.
Governor McCray proclaims May 12 as national hospital day in Indiana and urges residents to visit hospitals and learn about care for the sick and suffering. He notes the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children and the ongoing $2 million project with a $500,000 first unit under construction aiming for completion next fall.
A new basket factory began operation Monday in Warsaw with 30 to 35 employees. The firm organized last Saturday with capital stock of 50000 dollars and officers elected then.
W. E. Wood, recently at the Danville Soldiers' Home, sends word from Hoopeston Illinois where he now stays at the Roy Bowen home caring for the senior Mr. Bowen. He plans to be home for Decoration Day.
Jesse E. Eschbach, former head of the State Board of Accounts at Indianapolis, will move to Fort Wayne next week to take a position with the Lincoln Trust Company. He is a resident of Warsaw and known locally.
George O. Ulrey and Devon Olinger open a new machine shop in North Manchester occupying the former west end shop once run by Fred Horne. Ulrey, a skilled workman, recalls the family previously resided in town when Ulrey operated the local garage.
Mr and Mrs J R Norman and their son Claude traveled with a family visiting Akron Rochester Kewanna and Star City for a few hours They spent time with friends and stopped at Grasa Creek on the return trip totaling over 168 miles
