Mrs Emma Lowman of the north side suffered a sudden stroke Wednesday evening and has remained unconscious in serious condition. Her children are at the bedside with Wilbur expected to join from Warsaw today as the family awaits improvement.
Captain Walter Stou, medical reserve corps, stationed at Fort Riley Kansas, has spent several days this week visiting his mother and friends. He has been there for several months.
Local fountain and drug stores have orders to discontinue selling ice cream sundaes to conserve sugar amid nationwide shortages effective after Sunday evening June 16. The move affects general public access and follows government guidance on sugar distribution.
Workmen clearing a pea field near North Manchester found many galvanized iron wires erected upright. Believing the wires were placed by enemies of the U.S., a wardog has been issued urging farmers to inspect fields before cutting hay or grain.

Gladys Gregg four years old, daughter of Mr and Mrs Clarence Gregg, was fatally struck at Lukens Lake by a large automobile driven by Neil Unger 19 near Rich Valley Miami county. The car reportedly passed through the crowded park at about ten miles per hour as the child stepped in front of the vehicle. She died shortly after the accident. her mother and grandmother were present. Mrs Gregg is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Ively of Warsaw, former residents south of town.
Edward Hay went to Indianapolis Monday and remains this week taking the state board examination to obtain a license or practice dentistry. He is expected to score well given his careful study and attentiveness during his school years.
Clarence R. Budd Jontz travelled to Indianapolis last Thursday and enlisted in the medical reserve after passing the examination. He returned home on Friday and awaits order to report for duty likely at any time.
Mr and Mrs George Worley of Bloomington spent a month in Winona and visited the Al Carr home north of town on Sunday night. They called on friends in Silver Lake Monday forenoon.

Mrs. N. W. Way living southwest of town has been gravely ill for over a year and now remains in a very serious condition with the end possibly near after weeks of critical health.
Members of the Mothers club were entertained last Friday afternoon at the Mrs Frank Haney home.

A J Hill remains about the same in sickness with little to no improvement since the last issue.
Farmers are busy cutting hay which is plentiful and high quality. Wheat is ripening rapidly and within a week acres of golden grain will be shocked. The crop quality appears good overall.
Miss Verna Hoke returned home Friday from Anderson where she served as instructor in local schools for many years. The closing marks the end of her long tenure in the district.
Mr and Mrs James Kreighbaum of Huntington welcome a baby boy born a couple of weeks ago. Mrs Kreighbaum, formerly Miss Ruth Buck, is well known to Sue people in the locality.
Mrs. Lottie Brenneman who had been in North Manchester for several weeks fell ill late last week and returned home. Her condition remains about the same and she can be up only briefly at a time.
Mrs. EE B Jones and her daughter Miss Madge Wisler traveled to Mentone last evening and spent today in Syracuse for the annual Blue family reunion context.

Was quite sick Monday forenoon and for a time it was thought he could not long survive. His condition improved and he is getting along very nicely, with hopes he will soon be able to be in town.
Here from Chicago Mr and Mrs Russel Shoemaker arrive Sunday for a visit with the Andrew J Hill and Isaac Shoemaker families. Russel is in the draft and will be called to camp early next week. He registered a year ago in California.

Twenty four local boys will depart by the early train to Anderson Cincinnati and then to Camp Sherman near Chillicothe Ohio. Named voyagers are Paul R Day Lester Bloom Grover Arnold Ralph R Paul.
Charles Teeter and family moved from the E. Braude farm north of town to Warsaw at the start of the week. Teeter has taken a job driving an oil truck. The community wishes them abundance of success in their new home.
Reported to be between 2500 and 3000 visitors at Lukens Lake last Sunday. By about 5 PM the admission receipts surpassed $250 as attendees planned to stay for the evening.
Last Saturday twelve men from the county entered to Uncle Sam’s service and were sent to Indianapolis for training along special mechanical lines. Edward Cauffman of Claypool, once a high school instructor here, is among the group.
Orval Carr at Camp Snelling Minnesota writes home about a dusty train trip from Fort Wayne to Columbus, staying at a receiving station for five days with medical exams and crusty doctors, then Sunday letters from Silver Lake friends. He mentions the pleasant country seen and dining aboard the train.
