Mexican Estates and the Sale of Haciendas in Mexico
The great estates in Mexico pass from father to son and require vast land to sustain modest wealth. Even when willing to sell, haciendados favor selling entire tracts at prices from 25 cents to $5 per acre, hindering subdivision. A constitutional government offering subdivision and market pricing could improve fortunes, as the low land value stems from a tiny domestic market and reliance on foreign shipping. Masses earn 12 to 50 cents per day, higher wages near the U.S. border.
