A severe cold wave grips Northern Indiana with temperatures from 1 above to 18 below zero and heavier snows that block roads. Residents endure travel hazards as rural mail carriers struggle through the week amid extreme cold and drifting snow.
Snow depths reached 16 inches with heavy winds creating large banks on highways. The Michigan Division of the Big Four railroad faced widespread delays and some trains abandoned or stranded in drifts, causing hardship for passengers and crews.
J L Arthur disposed of his farm south of town to Mr Geiger of Milford for a consideration of 1500 dollars.
Will make no change in the business management of the Warsaw Daily Times and the Northern Indiana. To Mrs Read Williams has been transferred the interest of her departed husband, and Mel R Williams and his brother Logan H Williams retain their previously acquired shares in the business.
Wm Gresso started to the country Thursday afternoon with a horse and sleigh. He is in the sewing machine business. The horse kicked the sewing machine from the sleigh and nearly caused a mishap.
The Winona Assembly and Summer School Association prepares for its eleventh session with the general assembly of the Presbyterian church to convene on May 18 at Winona. Grounds and buildings are being readied despite snow and ice, with hotel renovations underway and the Goshen Warsaw interurban road expected to operate for part of the assembly.
County commissioners will be asked to build a cottage for old soldiers and their wives at the state soldiers home in Lafayette. Fifty six counties have provided cottages, with costs from 1,000 to 10,000, but Kosciusko has not yet built one, and the home is full with applicants awaiting admission.
Hiram Perry, longtime resident, died Saturday evening February 11 1905 near Silver Lake at age 67 years 7 months 9 days after a period of illness from asthma and heart trouble. He moved from Stark County Ohio to Kosciusko County Indiana in 1854 and was married twice first to Minerva Dotson then to Amanda Roger, leaving a large family including eight children and several grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at Bethel church conducted by Rev. C. J. Miner with interment nearby.
Revival gatherings at Center A. B. Church north of town have continued for two weeks with substantial attendance. Meetings occurred each evening despite bad weather and drew a large turnout.
Negotiations between Warsaw Water and Light Co and the Winona Assembly closed last week. Winona gains full possession of the water and light plant including franchises machinery pipes and all related assets.
The state superintendent reports a mistake in Frye's Advanced Geography listing Elkhart as the county seat of Elkhart County instead of Goshen. The corrected geography is now in general use in Indiana schools statewide.
The Silver Lake Grange 2146 P of H postpones the Wednesday meeting due to bad weather. It will be held next Wednesday evening February 22, with likely initiations. All members able to attend are urged to be present.
Frank Jenkins husband of Miss Oram of Warsaw dies in Wellington New Zealand. Survived by wife and sixteen children including three sets of twins. Relatives in Warsaw notified at one dollar five cents per word as cable travels twelve thousand miles.
Information arrives that Uncle Joe Penrod of Kansas City is growing quite feeble in health. He has not been out of the house for two months past, though he is able to be up and about much of the time, with some days feeling fairly well and other days markedly poorly.
Fribley Department Store will be known as Fribley Bros. & Co with new partners Willard Minard and Wayne Rittenhouse. Both clerks for ten years join the firm and bring new vigor, inviting friends to visit. Wayne Rittenhouse’s father Rev. W. H. L. Rittenhouse is noted as a Syracuse pastor born west of here.
Dr E B Flavien and family move to Peru to open a medical office and devote full time to medicine. He leaves the Central drug store after six years here to focus on practice, citing conflict between pharmacy and medicine. friends regret the departure but wish him success.
The Indiana State Board of Agriculture plans a record breaking event and has approved a large appropriation to fund newspaper advertising, asserting this publicity method yields the best results.
Moses Stoner and his daughter Lillian visited his mother Mrs. Henry in Warsaw when he suddenly grew gravely ill at breakfast. Dr Leckrone was summoned as circulation dropped. After treatment he slowly recovered enough to return home with Lillian on the Sunday night train.
Salvation Army units under Captain Atkins plan a series of meetings at the M. E. Church in this place with dates to be announced next week. The detachment is already holding successful services in Mentone with strong afternoon and evening attendance.
Mrs Ollie Marsh is expected to arrive today from Hartford City to visit her parents Elias Hively and his wife.
The note calls February the shortest month and warns it should not be too brief, echoing past Februaries that have been unusually short. It emphasizes caution against an unexpectedly short period this year.
The musical by Miss Maud Quivy's class at North Manchester has been postponed one week. Miss Edna Wiltrout is part of the class and will assist on the program.
The Elkhart County Medical Association will hold a banquet in Goshen on March 23. Physicians and surgeons from across the state will attend to honor the county society. An elaborate program is being arranged for a meeting of much interest.
The Tennessee Warblers held a well attended concert in Rager hall Wednesday evening with an engaging program. The chorus is praised as talented and worth hearing. Each night features a full change of program. Thursday’s program included the one act comedy Old Black Joe's Return.
A traveling seller offered a phonograph and twenty records for 87 to farmers. A contract promised delivery in two weeks, but the bank later purchased his note for 307 for a phonograph and twenty records at 12 each.
A physician established an exclusive practice after postgraduate study at the Illinois School of Electro Theraputics in Chicago. He equipped his office with a powerful X-Ray machine and is praised as an accomplished occulist. He will operate from the new telephone building on Fifth Street and reside at 266 East Sixth Street, in the former ex-sheriff Skinner residence.
